  • Injuries how long to recover so it's safe to play again?

2 weeks ago I bent over to pick something off the floor heard a pop and ended up face down on the kitchen floor in agony.

Managed to get a doctors appointment all he gave me 5 different prescriptions burning £50 of meds (probably why I can't afford stuff this month)

I was pretty much mobile a day after and able to walk around 3 days after and shuffled my way into work (if I don't work I don't get paid). I had a follow up last Friday all he said was be careful rest and don't strain yourself. It takes a different amount of time for each person to heal so I can't tell you how long.

So how long before I can go to a game again? I was thinking of a game last week but didn't want to risk it. I was thinking of a game starting in 2 hours but I find myself not wanting to risk it. But at the same time don't want to sit at home bored. The game just before I was injured I got the biggest kill streak in my life with 27 kills where absolutely everything went right for one game.

While I know you're not doctors and I'll do my own research (which just says depends) So how long do you reckon? Till it's safe?

This is of course on top of my tendon injury from a motorbike crash a few months back.

I seem to be missing a lot of games, dates, and events through injury... getting old isn't all it's cracked up to be

"While I know you're not doctors and I'll do my own research " probably the most important thing, hwo quickly someone else recovered, even for a similar injury isn't really all that relevant to yours. You're probably just better taking your doctors recommendations, and being conservative. Rushing recovery isn't very fun at all!

Was it a vasectomy? It was wasn't it. 3 days for me. No hurdling fences though.

The key thing here is , can you afford to miss work due to injury ? If no then play safe no money and injured will be even worse or try a shorter game ?

Im 6' 4" so always aware of my back, from the sound of it yours was vertebrae / spinal rather than muscular??
Ive always found most back issues stem from lack of mucular support to spine / muscular issue.

You say you had a crash so could be underlying issue but from my experience if it is muscular, see a good Osteo/Physio, relieve and tension etc, exercise as advised, dont ever sit around, always stay moible, swimming is brilliant, work out your back to increase muscle strength.

This sport is great for getting exercise but being in the UK this can end up a lot of the time being cold / damp, which sucks for back muscle issues!

The part you mentioned when something went pop worries me. That could have been slipped or partially slipped disc. No amount of medication will cure it, it's a physiological problem that requires expert examination. I'm also 6`4", I put my back out when I was 16 by lifting something far too heavy and bent at the waist while doing it. I still suffer back pain 45 years later. Don't be like me, get it checked out properly and take things easy until you do.

Hi matey , I'm an A&E nurse for my sins and I'd say if you heard a'pop' it's more than likely muscular, 9times out of 10 (but there is that 1 on its own) people tool up screaming "I've broken this or I've broken that I heard it snap !" No they haven't heard the bone snap they've heared the tendon or muscle tear or break , Tendons and muscles make noises when they get damaged because by there nature of construction (fibres) that's makes the noise , fold a belt in half let it hang loos then pull it back together quick , what happens? It makes a snapping noise exactly the same thing that happens when you over load muscle and tendons at speed , pain is your bodys way of telling you somethings not right and it needs time to repair . Stick with the GP gentle increasing exercise for now but if it's not recovering then ask for a referral to a specialist .
And if any one tells you to 'man up and get on with it !" Ask them if there willing to sign an indemnity that if you do any permanent damage because you 'man'ed up !' they'll support your family for you ? I'm sure they'll shut the f**k up and scuttle away like the cockwomble they are !

I pretty much regained all my mobility without a stoop by the Sunday (2 days) after it happened.

I find myself a little less flexible than before and some pain with sideways movement. But I am a lot more careful and I don't bend down much. I didn't even pick up a quid I saw on the street this morning :D

I just really worry about doing it again so I'm being cautious. It's just terribly frustrating having night in after night in after night in.

I worry a lot because my dad did his back in too in his 30s. I watched him have stoop for years yet still continue to work in pain to provide for us. While my job is only mentally taxing the prospect of me going through what he had to is scary.

I think tomorrow afternoon I'll phone around for some physiotherapists and see if they can put together an exercise plan for me.

                Thanks for everybody's input.

Contact your GP practice and see if there's any 'walk in' physio clinics in your are I have one near my hospital , basically you turn up fill in a quick questionnaire get seen and assessed by a physio and they'll tell you if you need further physio Input or you need something else . Worth a try as it could save you a LOT of money seeing a physio privately ?
