radio help Cobra MT 975's

ive just got some Cobra's MT975. We just bought some 2.5mm to 3.5mm adpaters. We use the adapters and a normal 3.5mm headset and earphone set. and put them in the top jack.

Now when i put the adapter or anything in the the Transmitting icon appears. "TX"
i turn another radio on to the same channel and all i hear is static. I cannot recieve or send anything i have also tried the intercom jack aswell. Anybody please help me? Its not the adapters as we tried and Xbox live headset but the speaker on the headset turned into a microphone (lolwtf).

we originally bought these to use with headsets which have microphones. But now we cant even get a simple headset to work.

any help will be GREAT
