Are the only differences the flashider and that the M16A1 usually uses normal m16 magazines rather than the VN shorter magazines.
(Airsoft wise differences, not real steel)

Yep pretty much. The Marui M16VN has the tulip/3-prong flash-hider whereas the M16A1 has the cage type. The VN also comes with the 20 round STANAG as apposed to the 30 round one a you said. The VN also (as Ninja'd above) has the slab sided receiver without the forward assist.

Re: Difference between M16VN and M16A1
Oh and also with the Marui ones, it is said that the M16VN has a more reinforced barrel joint to counteract barrel wobble, a problem with the M16A1 which was an older Marui design.

Re: Difference between M16VN and M16A1
but the vn version requrees a full stripdown to get at the gear box as it doesnt have the cut outs in the gearbox to let the tabs through, but on the flipside it is more accurate and stable due to no barrel wobble
trading WE M16A1 for CYMA or RS SVD with PSOP
