  • Is there an R5 airsoft gun?

Just want to know if there is an R5 airsoft gun.

An R5 is currently the South African police weapon of choice along side the R6.

    Cheers

a quick google shows it is a galil made under liscense, with a longer stock for the larger south african soldier and stronger material polymer magazines

          R5 Assault Rifle
Vektor (a small arms division of Denel corporation, currently Denel Land Systems)

The R5 is a 5.56 mm assault rifle that was introduced into service with the South African Defence Force in the early 1980s, replacing the earlier 7.62 mm FN FAL rifle, that was manufactured in South Africa under a license agreement from Fabrique Nationale. The R5 is produced by Vektor (a small arms division of Denel corporation, currently Denel Land Systems). The weapon is a licensed variant of the Israeli Galil assault rifle with several modifications; notably, both the stock and magazine are now made of a high-strength polymer and the stock's arms were lengthened, adapting the weapon for the average South African soldier. The R5 is a selective fire, gas-operated weapon that fires from a closed bolt.

Galil SAR with a couple of mods will look almost exactly the same.

                Hi Knarf3

I served during the SADF bush war during 86-88 and carried a R5 myself (lovely weapon btw)... remember that the R5 was not the beginning point.....

The R4 was the forerunner that was adapted from the Galil, this was the weapon that most of the SADF troops (especially infantry) carried, it had a longer stock/barrel (increased range) and has a bipod under the barrel at the front of the stock that doubled as a wire cutter (tho you were forbidden to cut any wire fences as this just annoyed the farmers) The older R4s had a folding metal stock and a wooden handgrip - this was later changed to a polymer stock and a polymer handgrip.

The R5 was a shorter barrel version and did not have the bipod it was mainly used by units in vehicles (eg mechanised forces) and units where house clearance was involved (e.g. police) as the shorter rifle gave a quicker sweep over a room etc. we were issued them (reaction force) as we were on and off armoured vehicles all the time.

Here is a picture where I am holding a R4 (older version, wooden stock)

Here is another pic, this time I have an R5 on the desk next to me (stock folded).....

Re: Is there an R5 airsoft gun?

The R series weapons also have a heavier barrel than their Isreali counterparts but it's a minor detail that is hard to pick out and pointless in airsoft form .

                  Great post CPL Mulder
