Insurance
11 April, 2011, 18:40
We had the police call round earlier today as one of my neighbours was burgled on Saturday night. Apparently they managed to get away with quite a lot of stuff [the burglars, that is, not the police]. I live on an A-road in a busy South London town, with constant traffic (especially emergency vehicles), even in the middle of the night, so this was very surprising.
My mum suggested I consider insuring my "toys". I don't feel it particularly necessary as none of my RIFs are particularly high-value. Also, it may prove impractical should I choose to sell my "toys" on in the future. The one concern I do have is that if we were to be the victim of a burglary, the perpetrators could potentially take and use my "toys" for some nefarious activities. I'd hate to think of some goon using my AK, or, more likely, my pistol, to hold up some poor shopkeeper. That said, I keep them in a lockable wardrobe, and I don't ever take them out in public unless they're in a purpose-made case.
Obviously some people spend considerable amounts on Airsoft, especially on replica firearms. Do any of you have your RIFs insured? Would they be covered by normal household contents insurance? Do you display your toys or keep them locked away?

Re: Insurance
Generally speaking, anything inside your house will be covered under your contents insurance whilst inside your house. The only catch being you might be limited to the value per item.
It probably would be a good idea to insure them for theft when outside the house, but it is probably a bit of a pain to do so as the specialist hobby toys.

Re: Insurance
You will also need a proof of purchase for your goodies if you ever need to claim, due to them being quite a niche market so hard for insurers to value the items.
A good idea would be to keep reciepts etc in a folder. I dont though, I put more effort hiding evidence of airsoft spending from my wife then i do hiding my porn stash.

That's not true is it....?!
Otherwise nobody would ever get paid out for a household claim.

Re: Insurance
If you don't mind me asking, how much total value did you insure, and for how much extra? Does that cover you for outside the home too?

Re: Insurance
I keep all mine locked away. Will require just as much effort of beating down a front door to get in and see what's inside so I don't bother with insurance seeing as I have way more valuable stuff just laying around. RIF's would be the last things I insure.

Re: Insurance
Mine are covered by my house insurance, i had to list them to the company because they do not have them on there data base but it added £23 a year for the privilege !! Not bad seeing as they are insured outside the house as well ie in the car during transport etc
I did wonder if it was worth it though seeing as mine are in the loft which is locked and i live in a bungalow with 4 bull mastiffs walking around in the hall at all times !!!!!
Ask about joining the UNIT

Re: Insurance
My university house was burgled on friday. They took a whole bunch of stuff, including my Glock 18C (Thankfully they left my PDW). The insurance company are covering all of my losses, including the rif. They just wanted to know the manufacturer, model and price. It's all covered by contents insurance.

Re: Insurance
I have sucessfully claimed for airsoft kit stolen from a car. Claim went through as 'sporting equipment' and was settled with no bother.

Re: Insurance
define "recognised"?
fair point, but sport has a very broad definition, no reason at all why airsoft shouldn't be counted as one
