i thought the g&p version on the m16a3 w/ m203 was plastic?

Ah, I always figured it was metal from the look of it

From a few minutes of research, it looks like pretty much all brands are plastic/polymer (I assume the Real Steel is too?)
I suppose if you have the money you could get one custom machined out of aluminium or steel, but from what's available, I'd imagine the G&P to be one of the sturdiest

It's a HEAT SHIELD. A metal heatshield would conduct heat. They are polymer on real firearms.
