gbb in winter
9 August, 2009, 22:11
ok im new to the whole gas gun scene
ive fallen in love with the new WE scar
what i want to know, before i shell out my hard earned studen loan
is how usable they really are in the winter?
was thinking of putting hand warmers in my internal map pocket behind the mag pouches on my rig to help keep them warm in winter but i duno if that would help!

Re: gbb in winter
They are pretty annoying in winter - sluttering mags, frozen mags, crap gas consumption - but for all the rest of the year they are awesome.
Shotgun or aep for winter
GBB for rest of year
As said above co2 pistols are good in winter but fps is too hot for the rest of the year.
Winter gas helps a bit but still freeze up after 2 mags.
Also when it freezes the mags start leaking and all sorts which freezes the seals and they crack.

Re: gbb in winter
i thought it was like the rubber on the vavles that can get damaged in the cold temperatures?

Re: gbb in winter
Hand warmers will solve the problem of the gas cooling before you start firing, but you will still get cool down during prolonged use.
Having said that, I've used a GBB pistol (full metal) in just over freezing temperatures and it fired and fed perfectly.

Re: gbb in winter
yeah, i was thinking id have to rotate mags to stop the mag sitting in the gun and cooling down while not in use,
so can they actually be damaged by the cold itself??

Re: gbb in winter
It's not the cold reducing the temperature that effects them in use, it's the cooling effect that happens when the pressure is reduced during firing. This happens to all compressed gasses, but it effects propane quite a lot.
CO2 is the best bet in winter, as said above, but I know at least one site that doesn't allow CO2 guns as they are easy to tune over site limits after chronoing.
The cold could, in theory, dammage the rubber seals, but I doubt very much you'll be out playing in those sorts of temperatures. I've had the seals on a diving regulator freeze after a winter cold water dive and they were fine after defrosting.

Bit wrong there, ive seen CO2 guns running nearer 600fps at hot sites (such as the rock)
