Re: Charging batteries via the Car
only reason i know it mate is I design and sell MOD and specialist vehicles electrical systems so have this same discussions with customers 2-3 times a week lol.
I'm afraid I was a Art student who got to work for a company who fully trained me so I owe them really lol.
But if anyone needs a hand with anything from a ambulance to a Jackal to a Sunseeker send me a PM.

Re: Charging batteries via the Car
Just a quick note on this.
I'm one of the marshals at Section 8, and I regularly have 4 or 5 of the Pro Peaks running for most of the day charging a range of batteries from 1100mAh minis up to 3700mAh full size packs, with the dial turned all the way up to 5.5.
To date, I've never had a problem starting the engine afterwards. Ok, it's a fairly large battery, but it is starting a pretty big diesel engine at the end of the day, and even in the dead of winter, it still catches fine.

Re: Charging batteries via the Car
On the issue of inverters. According to the manual, the pro peak will do 7.2-8.4V @ .5-3A @230V and .5-5.5A @12V on a fast charge cycle. 7.2-8.4V @130mA on 12V and 7.2-9.6V @130mA on 240V. Unless you are needing to charge a 9.6V on trickle in the field, then running an inverter to run your charger is about as inefficient as you can get.

Re: Charging batteries via the Car
Split charge system would be the best answer but again not needed for the loads discussed. unless you are planning on runing the charger all day if thats the case then yes a VSR (voltage sensative relay ) or Smart bank split charge sysem would work very well but again you are talking about runing heavy duty charge cables to your secondary battery bank. a second battery and the relay itself more than likely around the £200 mark plus VAT plus carriage.
The better option would be to go down the route of a power gaurd this is a system I supply to most Police vehicles in the UK it enables you to run a source on a battery down to a point so that the engine is always able to crank. essentially it means you can flatten the battery bank as far as possible without compromising the vehicles abilities.

Re: Charging batteries via the Car
the better route is the old medical equipment battery I have at home and the inverter my dad built himself but its heavy as hell.
Dam thing must have over 1000 amps stored at 24v now thats a lot of charging lol
