You know people wont like a conventional airburst rounds? how about a system that fires an almost bucket like shape, full of bbs towards the enemy. and the bucket is tethered to the source with some heavy duty cord. so that when it is fired, once its at the end of its tether the 'bucket' stops but the bbs, continue to move through momentum.

the only issues i see with this is that you would leave a long trail and a bucket...

What you're describing is called a "discarding Sabot". They're currently in us in tank guns, tough not with the cord.

The sabot is designed to expand, and fall away from the shell/flechette when it leaves the barrel.

Many, many moons ago, someone made a paintball bazooka using a couple of styrofoam coffee cups, filled with .50 calibre paintballs. It's basically a shotgun, though - equivalent to the old grapeshot.
