hmmm when I looked at this two years or so ago I couldn't make it cost out, and not enough clear blue water between such a scheme and places like this or certain other forums that carry sales.

I even got to the point of securing a domain (airsoftexchange.co.uk)

Would be a good idea though, especialy if it is well regulated.

Yes but would you pay for it? It would need to compete with forums where sales are free and 99.9% of them complete with all parties happy

Make it pay with advertising like a lot of others do or sponsors - x sponsors the main page, y sponsors z section, scrolling adverts at the top, etc. ONly got to look at UCAP as an example.
Works on at least 5 of the forums I use that aren't paid for by a shop/dealer/site/??

I know how to make things pay, you have missed the point. Why would people use it when there are sales sections either totally or largely advert free that have a high number of people clicking through via the forums in which they are based?

What is the USP? Where do you add the value? The only options I came up with required such a site to generate money that wouldn't be costed in by advertising alone.

Try the fact that it would be impartial, not linked to a shop, people can sell what they want without the moderators deleting posts, threads, items (within reason), etc.
If need be can link to sites from other dealers without recriminations.

that's already pretty much covered elsewhere, and for free.

It would still need some moderation no matter what. You cant escape that, not even Autotrader allows complete freedom and for very good reasons
