Yep. A weapon that is RS dimensions, RS weight, has same functional controls and field strips the same- at least down to (fake) bolt carrier.
The fact that it operates on gas and has similar recoil (to blank firing RS SA80) is a fantastic bonus. The G36C operates in sub-zero temperatures so one will expect nothing less from a WE L85A2.

I understand a branch of the UK armed forces have expressed interest in the WE L85A2. I think that if WE listen to them then they'll hopefully ensure the WE L85A2 replicates the functionality of the real steel- e.g. field strip gas piston, cylinder and gas piston spring plus bolt release and holding open catch.
That being the case, then it's potential goes beyond airsoft skirmishing. It becomes a true professional training weapon for armed UK forces and cadets.
I bought my AAR85 off a guy that had a job lot he said he got from the Marines, so it's certainly plausible that someone in the Forces recognises airsoft's use as a training aid

Re: Gbb sa80/l85a2
Yep, the Royal Marines.
SF forces use airsoft weapons for training- that's not news.
Using issued weapons? It's great training with blanks with all the noise, smell of cordite, brass flying all over the place but it's not the same value as having real (non-lethal)l rounds heading your way. It's just weird having targets in your sights and firing off half a mag and they are still pointing at you firing off their rounds- it's unrealistic.
Using airsoft weapons creates a new dynamic that really tests section drills and small unit tactics. It also removes some of the constraints of using real weapons on prescribed ranges. Using airsoft weapons means you can have a greater range of sites to train,

Re: Gbb sa80/l85a2
the WE will have open bolt, the prototype already has working gas parts ! Should not suffer cool down as it will be based on the g36 system which i have proven first hand will work down to minus 10c.
The star/ares is not as well replicated as the g&g when it comes to 99% of it.
I'm trying to convine WE that they may as well go straight for the modern version complete with ris for the biggest market impact.
Expect takedown etc to be complete replication of the real steel as per other WE releases.
No confirmed release date yet

The Royals dont use Airsoft for force on force. I think you may of got that info from youtube when the Marines did it for fun. When we were on holiday my troop where invited to Airsoft which was funded by the MOD and my dad did paintballing after he passed out not for training.
What use is an Airsoft gun for if your going through rivers and mud, days or even weeks on training and are you going to wind magazines? Battery power? Stoppages etc etc its unrealistic. So instead they use laser technology for training.

To an extent you are quite correct but your view of airsoft is very narrow too

Re: Gbb sa80/l85a2
I'm now an Ex Royal Marine and just before Herrick 9 we did have south west wargames let us us the Airsoft guns to train with at Scraesdan fort in plymouth, was a good little training aid for us which turned in to a bit of a muck around. was the only time in my time serving that we used the airsoft guns like that, did have my guns on camp though which allowed us to "practice" room clearances on eachother with
claymore worked a treat too lol
