Pivothead Recon HD Video Glasses.
12 December, 2012, 12:30
Hi all.
I first saw these on soldier systems, they were talking about Pivothead and they're newest model (recon) with its 1080p built in camera with onboard mic and 8gb hard drive. This model differed from the others in they're range because it's made with law enforcement/military in mind.
Not only do they film in glorious 1080p but you can change to 720p with varying fps, so you can toggle what suits best. Also a whole host of settings can be changed when connected to a computer. A switch on the left arm pressed forward beings recording, flipping forward again stops recording. Flipping the switch backwards takes a still photo.
So impressed of the capabilities, I decided I wanted a pair, seeing as they are a cool alternative to helmet cams.
I emailed pivothead and asked them if they'd be suitable for airsoft, in short they said no. However I wanted to try these for myself and see how the lenses stood up to the punishment that airsoft guns could throw at it. These lenses are classified as ANSI-87.1 impact resistant which are to the same standards as WileyX eyewear I believe.
If they failed completely its no loss as replacement lenses are fairly cheap, they are designed to be interchangeable and the glasses would be great to use when I'm skiing or riding my bike.
You can see my impact test here

Re: Pivothead Recon HD Video Glasses.
Nice review, what about the lens for the camera? will that with stand a hit? and how durable is the frame? And did you have them shipped overseas or can you buy them in the UK?

Thanks. I don't think the camera lenses would stand up to anything like what the glasses lens stood up to. I was thinking of making a shield that would surround the camera but not make it look craptacular. The frames are pretty sturdy and solid. They made them pretty tough.
Although there maybe an issue with bbs getting in through areas around the cheeks which could be hazardous. However a lower mesh face guard seems to remedy this.
There's a retailer over here selling them along with other models, links available in the description on the video

Re: Pivothead Recon HD Video Glasses.
Yes mate.
I've been really lucky with the video as Pivothead themselves have seen the video and has sent me some gear to review which includes the Air Pivothead which allows you to wirelessly transfer the data from glasses to devices (iPad, iPhone etc..) a battery pack that recharges the glasses when out and about and some replacement lenses
So that'll be really useful for days/weekends away. Hope to have the accessory video out this week.

Re: Pivothead Recon HD Video Glasses.
It's got 8gb on board. Which isn't much compared to other POV cameras, it'll fill up quicker if your filming in 1080 but if one is filming in 720p, it can get a bit more on there.
That's the great thing about the Air Pivothead device, you can just transfer the video over to any devices and free up more space should you need it.

Re: Pivothead Recon HD Video Glasses.
its better than oakleys, they crack at around 500 fps, ess mark at around 500, from the video it was being hit with 530 fps multiple times and only what looked like indents, thats pretty good going and fine for airsoft
PM me if you're looking for S-ARMS M4 mags

I transferred a file around 800mb in about 4minutes.
I expected the lenses to fail when I was running the G39 through it. Was thrilled when they withstood past the 500 mark with the M16. With only minimal denting.
