Holding ground... any other ideas
2 April, 2010, 17:29
a common game type at my site which maybe be common at many sites is the old attack and defend with multiple bases so when the attackers take one base the defenders fall back to the next base.
well just before we started defended we was throwing out ideas of how to hold them back as long as possible then between me( i've been skirmishing for close to 2 years now) and this first timer( who was a hell of a shot aswell) came up with the idea of a defensive semi circle much likewhat the romans did 2000 years ago however more spaced out so the attackers push into the centre where they are met by cross fire.so at least one person could see where they are pushing through. This worked until one of our flanks fell through me and 2 others running out of ammo and losing our teams medic we managed to hold the attackers off for 30 minutes of a game with a time limit of an hour. this was a 30 vs 30 game for those who might wanna know.
was just wondering if anyone else had other ideas of holding ground in this type of game

Re: Holding ground... any other ideas
We do a very similar scenario at CSW (D-Day, the attackers have to capture the village, then the bunker complex, then the farm). And the best way we found is a rolling backwards defence when they are in the bunker area (a wooded area about 400m long with about 6 bunkers and some fox holes). You have 3-4 lines of guys all in cover, and then you roll each line back as the attackers start to fully engage it. So as soon as they get dug in to take out the line of defence that line retreats back behind the second line. We do this alot and it quite often holds the attackers up for the whole 45 mins of play. Works very well and the teams tend to be 40-50 +. But you do have to give ground to the attackers in order for this to work, but it slows them right down to a crawl.

Not a bad idea. How did you cope with the problem of friendly/cross-fire? Or were the two sides spaced very far apart?

Airsoft claymroes and blank-firing 'alarm mines' are good at slowing down the opfor too... if you set a couple most players will slow right down and be much more cautious in the attack, which works for you!
Identify choke points and if you have support guns get them well hidden and covering those points so they can suppress the enemy advance. Individual shooters can then manouvre and counter attack in a more flexible pattern. Once you've taken a few out, relocate and hit them again. Lather rinse and repeat

Re: Holding ground... any other ideas
The Mall do a similar thing for the very first game but instead of two even teams the attackers are smaller with unlimited spawns but if the players on the larger defending team get shot they go over to the other side so you get to a point where attackers are greater than defenders.
Having points to fall back on is necessary but with CQB you can fall back through a choke point, if you can get them to form up at this choke point which they will naturally do with well aimed fire you can throw a grenade or two and then go on the offensive its something they will not expect with many people not ready with there weapons and as a result if you continue the charge using your momentum you can push them back to the previous hold points.
Then rinse and repeat

Re: Holding ground... any other ideas
At TWA we have a game like that where you have to defend the pit then fall back to the village. Me and a few of my mates do a thing where when a group of you are hit you fall back in staggered protrol and the go to your designated postions. You have a support gunner on each flank ( as at TWA they can only attack you in the village from 180 degrees) and if you have a third put him in the final building at the back. If you do not have support gunners get a group of about 2-3 assualt rifles and if you can a sniper also. Then the rest of your team fill up the remaning buildings. Appart from a selection of about 5 men which get dug in at the edge of the village on top of the hill to engage the enemy as they are moving up the hill. This is ussually done in about 25-25 game senarios and holds then off for about half an hour.

It's always worth tucking one hold-out player into the hardest to find place in each building. If they don't actually engage the attackers, they can pop out after the enemy has decided that the building is clear, forcing them to return to the building in case there are more players hiding there.

Me and my mates usually hide with one of us visible (always me). When the attackers get close i shout a secret code word and they mow down the attackers
It is great seeing 20+ guys run away from 4 guys.

Re: Holding ground... any other ideas
i find the best way to hold ground is to go on the offensive, during the inevitable lull i always try push forward to consolidate any dead ground, make the enemy work for ground they prevouisly held
that is if the defence is going well...
if not fire and manouver back out of contact all the way

Re: Holding ground... any other ideas
As Jonny357 has probably realised by now, my fave tactic in almost ANY situation is a flank. Leave some of your team defending how they see fit, then take some of your more tactically aware chaps back through your own lines & then do a massive loop around yours & your opponents lines & come in from behind them. Depending on the field & game rules, you can take your time & do a sneaky beaky patrol around, or my personal specialty, a MASSIVE loop around them, running most of the way (It's not uncommon for me to run best part of a mile, just to get behind unnoticed). Then catch your breath & just simply engage them from behind, in this scenario, I tend to think a "spray & pray" philosophy is best, as all you need to do is tie the enemy up, not necessarily kill them
Also works best if your fit & by yourself, unless of course you have team mates that are also fit lol, which lets face it . . . Isn't generally in an airsofters armoury . . . Maybe because you can't put RIS on it . . .

i guess digging in to really good cover is the only way to hold ground, without it you are to vulnerable to sit tight any where for to long.

Take the fight to them, move in positions to stop the enemy flanking and surrounding you. This was working really well until this one guy would'nt take his hits which distracted qn got me killed.
