Evening the odds- Low-cap v Mid-cap
13 April, 2009, 14:06
I've been giving this much more though recently given that my WE M4 GBB PTW only takes real-capacity mags known in Airsoft as 'Low-cap' mags. In Milsim games, a majority of players use mid-cap mags with between 80 and 120 rounds in each mag.
When you are up against an opfor (individual) with 120 rounds in their mag and you only have 30 rounds in your mag, what can you individually do to even (or at least close the gap on the) odds of winning that contest?
I think its a combination of:
* Weapon handling skills
* Mag change drills
* belt/ chest rig set-up
* Fire and Movement drills- i.e. better CQB skills
* Having a weapon with better range and accuracy
If you can use all the above to get at least 120 rounds of effective fire (i.e. 4 low-cap mags) down on the opfor in the same time they expend their 120 rounds, then you've at leat narrowed the odds. Of course sustaining the firefight is another thing since there are only so many 30 round mags you can carry. So accuracy and better CQB skills are essential to get at least one hit a kill with your first 4 mags- worst case. I 'aim' to get at least one hit per 30 round mag by using a combination of the above skills/drills. Training is however needed to properly and effectively employ 30 round mags when going up against players with 120 round mid-caps. If you're up against an individual with a mid-cap and you have'nt dropped them by your 4th Low-cap then it's time to consider bugging out and/or call for help!
Of course organised 4- man fire teams (with buddy-buddy approach) properly employed will almost always defeat a rabble of spray-n-pray hi-cap merchants who think they are son of rambo and gods gift to Special Forces
I've seen operators change a mag in under 3 seconds.That may be quicker than your average airsofter can range you in a firefight which means you could have the edge.
Drop'm out with a low cap and save the environment.

Depends on some points though. If your in decent cover, they could slam a whole mag off aiming over your head. When they reload, do them!
different rates of fire in a 4 man section help, if 2 are firing about 1 round every 2 seconds and the other two fire one every 6, the first two will expend a mag in 1/3 of the time the second lot do. Add this to bounds to reach the enemy, then new mag on, and automatic.
Use semi rather than full auto will help, remembering that most mid cap users will use auto because they can with the number of rounds they hold on them. If your not too bothered about your mags, a mag change can be done very quickly. CQB pouches with the elastic off, mag pulls and leaving a mag. Alternativly, leave the front of your jacket open and bang them down there, or use a dump pouch.
Or just call on the sniper or long range marksman.

Excellent stuff. I agree fire control orders, whilst very easy to implement are rarely used.
BUt opfor keeping heads down while your side advance in short leaps is the way to go and what's more, it does work most of the time.

Ever heard of the numbers game? Someone emptying a 300 round mag at you and one of them 6mm is bound to hit yours truly
But of course one should strive (or better still 'aim') to be the best shot to win the contest- certainly agreed.

Or, keep your head down, and when they reload, get 'em in the face. A sniper battle that happened to me just this weekend gone is a classic example of this. Every couple of second i heard the crack of a BB hitting the wood above my head, and every couple of secconds im sure he heard the same thing. Nobody got hit in that one though

I used to carry 8 30rd mags. Gave up carrying 8 and went down to 6. This was in an AEG. I can't remember a time where I took more pellets, than I landed on the other team. My AEG wasn't spectacular either. I guess it's down to the fact I don't fire a burst when a single shot will do. Cover fire? Single shot, as close to the target as you can land it. Job done. See a target? Can't hit him with 1 shot? What makes you think you can hit him with 120?

You're right. I just came back from a MILSIM non-stop weekend combat mission.
I used just four 30 round gas mags with my WE M4 GBB (during the day) and got the highest hit count in my squad. That was only because I carefully checked my targets and fired when I was certain to hit them- risky because I took my time which increases the risk of me being hit. But this was only 20% of the contribution-
80% of the contribution to the hit success came from a rifle that has amazing accuracy and range combined with a well zero'd 4x32 ACOG scope

Dont use lows,only mids on mil sim days,but general airsoft days you have to respect the chap that goies out with real caps,bur the noise those gbb guns make gives you away

+1
Covering fire can be done effectively with few BB placed well rather than a 100 not. takes trigger discipline though
