wondering what ideas you all had on tactics for being a support gunner.

Re: MG(support) tactics
lots of firepower, keep heads down by firing at or around enemy positions, cause distraction taking the enemys attention away from your team mates who are flanking with sustained fire power to name but a few
PM me if you're looking for S-ARMS M4 mags

Re: MG(support) tactics
I remeber a quote once, but can't remember the meaning, but I do recall it had something to do with supporting fire and manouvre
Defilade fire from an enfilade position
Or maybe I am wrong!
Any how, depending on what range you have, sight yourself high up, behind, and slightly off from the movement of your fireteam/section/mates.
As Danhc says, put down covering fire as they move up to take the enemy position, that way they keep their heads down.
As they move in to assault the position, switch fire to another enemy position, further in depth to the one being assaulted.
They should then roll up the enemy. Obviously, if there is only one enemy position to take, once they have smashed that, move up to reorg.

Re: MG(support) tactics
As the above said, you want to be keeping a high density of fire on the enemy position whilst your team are advancing or retreating, you may also want to consider the use of a second gunner in a seprate position to get a decent sized beaten zone, also if you're in buildings he can stop people who are trying to flank around your side and likewise.
Your job is not to kill the enemy, just to provide a massive amount of killing power so that your mates can kill them.

Re: MG(support) tactics
That's right, your job is to supress the enemy while your team mates advance (or retreat in some cases). It's not about individual kills but team kills. Of course, you need a team that understands what you're doing as well. A couple of times I've supressed the enemy only to have my team mates just sit there
I've also sucessfully used my M249 for ambushes and area denial too

Re: MG(support) tactics
im loving this thread. having finaly found and purchased an m60vn (which is about 10cm longer and far heavier (in a good way) than my m16 i have been practicing deployment methods to get the most out of its range & rof. this is giving me plenty of pointers.
one trick i have seen used quite a bit in woodland games where there are area boundrys is the support gun team (gunner with 2-3 riflemen) hugging the very edge of the gaming area to create a killzone accross the centre area and protecting their rear & a flank at the same time. it seems to be rather effective

Re: MG(support) tactics
I love doing ambushes! I remember spending most of the Sunday one GZ Weekender at the back of village ambushing people by a T section. I was at the end of the T hidden in the undergrowth. I'd wait until people came down the path and open up on them, some would get hit, the others would scatter either side (to the top edges of the T), only to be taken out by my team mates hidden either side. Worked VERY well. One of my team mates estimated I got 40+ kills there
Only downside to support weapons are boxmags, making them almost worthless though

Re: MG(support) tactics
I'm not convinced by support weapons at most sites. An averagely upgraded AEG with a box mag can do the same job and be a lot easier to carry.
On the other hand, in milsim and at sites which restrict your ammo load, support weapons come into their own and can work the way they are supposed to in the real world.
From personal experience, I wouldn't even consider one at GZW but would love to use one at Dragon Valley where they run short games with a maximum ammo load of 600 per person unless you're running a real-world support gun.
I watched an assault at DV once where just two support guns completely suppressed one whole side of a building (about 25m long, with lots of windows) allowing people to get close enough to drop pyro through the windows by standing just below the ledges. Without the suppressing fire, these high-set windows have a field of fire that makes that side of the building pretty much untouchable.

Yeah spot on there Robin.
An Airsoft M249 or M60 has the same internals (Near enough) as any other assault rifle AEG.
The only difference is the shape of the casing that it's in.
Alot of you are talking about Airsoft machine guns as if they were real,
Airsoft machine guns don't work in the same way as real machine guns, they generally have the same range, same ROF and same fps as any other assault rifle.
But as RR said, in milsim the ammo limitations can play a part.

Re: MG(support) tactics
the bonus i have seen with support guns is that they are designed to be set up on their bipod from a prone/fixed position and are comfy to shoot from said pose. that with a large battery & huge box mag make them ideal for sustained defence & heavy fire onto positions.
on a lesser note fear factor occasionaly comes into play. some people seem to automaticaly retalitate to the sight of a m249 or m60 by producing a brown brick in their trousers.
there could also be the realism factor that some players perceive an aeg with a drum/cmag as being a bit ghay. others like myself just want the feel of having an absolute monster of an aeg that breaks away from the norm of assault rifles & SMG's.
totaly agree with the milsim aspect however (and by the sounds of it i aught to go to dragon vally at some point) the extra ammo allowed to support guns in a milsim game makes them very important to the side that weilds them

I've seen a MP5K with 3000rd boxmag and large battery taped to the outside of it. Made me weep

True but I imagine most get an LMG for the hell of having a big arse gun that they love! I would get one, but I am a small guy, and sneaky sneak is the game i play!!!

and i would have been weeping there with you mate. im not anal about guns using mids and the like (hi caps ftw) but things like that are an eyesore.
on topic tho. im going to be using my m60 in cqb this weekend. (open'ish office floors & factory floors so plenty of room to maneuver and a couple of elevated positions as well) any suggestions for getting the most out of it in both offensive & defencive roles ?
