Re: Taclights: Strobe or not?
I think not using strobes because people have undiagnosed conditions is not a great idea. It's pampering to the health and safety culture, airsoft is a sport/game but it is potentially dangerous, which is why we all sign disclaimers when we play.
Do we ban thunder flash incase people have hearing damage/problems undiagnosed ?
What about snickers incase someone has an undiagnosed nut allergy or diabetes?
On the tactics I've never seen them used that effectively and I'm not sure if they don't work on me or were just used well but the couple of times they have tried to use them to clear the room I've always shot the person with the strobe

i disagree with this, pampering to health and saftey isnt the issue, if people start going to sites and having problems because of disabilitys then the site will lose members.having a simple question system at the beggining of the day to avoid any problems is a good idea for protection, not only of peoples health/enjoyment but to protect airsoft.
snickers have nut warnings on them for people with allergys, just incase you havent noticed
.
airsoft is not dangerous, as we take the nessacery precautions and use effective saftey equipment, attitudes are what makes it dangerous :D

Re: Taclights: Strobe or not?
I didnt say it wasnt a good idea to ban the use of them at a site if someone has a condition that is known about and every time ive played the site has always said if you have a problem with strobes come and see us and we'll ban the use of them.
The disclamer you sign is the same as the warning on the snickers pack, it is YOUR choice to play with the known risks.
Airsoft IS dangerous, you are firing projectiles and throwing around pyros etc, accidents can happen and yes we all take precautions to make sure nothing serious happens but that doesnt change the fact that it is dangerous. This is the whole reason you are made to sign a disclamer and understand the risks.
If you go onto an airsoft site and are dismissive of the risks that is when accidents are more likely to happen.

Re: Taclights: Strobe or not?
My opinion is pro strobe however if someone has a condition that means strobes could cause harm then it's down to them to tell the people managing the site who in turn should announce they won't be used that day.
I think there's already a bit too much health and safety in place to start banning everything but that might just be me.

Im not ganna go down the health issues with this but to be honest I hate strobes! Takes the realism of the game but on a tactical side of the game its a good way of distracting your enemy.
Example
I was the Mall one time And in the basement there was a guy with a strobe pointed at us..he had put his gun on a bipod on the ground pointing at us..blinding us in everyway and he was standing over the his gun with a pistol waiting for anyone who pops thier head out..well you know the rest lol
Cus of that no one could even try go down that couridor cus it was jammed with with guy in the corner..
So you can say they are good way of stopping people from attacking but i stil hate them lool
Assumption is the mother of F*&% Ups!

Re: Taclights: Strobe or not?
Chances of strobes causing epilepsy in someone who doesnt already know they have it, close to zero.
Tactical value... limited, pretty close to zero...
should they be banned? they are about the same danger as very high lumen torches or high powered lasers, both of which are usually restricted, so mabye yeah.
unlike pyro their tactical use is very limited, so i see no real issue in banning them....

Re: Taclights: Strobe or not?
(sorry for the thread necro >_< )
Personally speaking... I hate strobes - not because I'm epileptic, but because I am incredibly photosensitive. Flash photography sends blades of pain into my skull, leaves retina-burn after-images for 10-20 minutes afterwards.... and this is why I am always seen in photos to have my eyes closed. Now, don't get me wrong - I'm an avid clubber and have no issue with strobes being used on a dancefloor - because they're usually deployed in a floodlight housing that illuminates the entire room. Directed, focused strobe lighting (taclight strobe, flash photography, blah blah) is the type that buggers me up.
In a perfect world (for me at least), the only strobes in a CQB site would be bolted to the walls so EVERYONE gets the disorientating effects if they want to push through an area... but I do get the feeling that I am in the minority here.
Therefore, to be perfectly frank, if someone uses a strobe taclight on me to get an advantage, i'll screw my eyes closed, take the hits... and then hunt the user down later. Twice.

Re: Taclights: Strobe or not?
Soooo, what about bright torches then? Thats focused, a quick blast equates to the same thing.
Its not the strobe you have an issue with, its the bright light (my brother in law has the same issue).
Wear yellow lenses.
(That was also the 'cure' when driving at night too).
Oh P.S.
Using a strobe correctly IS tactics and strategy.
section 24 of the 1968 Act
Supplying imitation firearms to minors
1)It is an offence for a person under the age of eighteen to purchase an imitation firearm
2)It is an offence to sell an imitation firearm to a person under the age of eighteen.

Why not just hunt them down the once, in the dead zone or safe zone, and just ask them not to use it? Explain yourself and most people will be reasonable enough to listen.

Re: Taclights: Strobe or not?
So to all these people banging on about people with potentially undiagnosed epilepsy, surely you're at the same amount of risk if you go to a nightclub? or to the cinema? or the circus? you would have found out long before you started playing airsoft. Its only a toy torch; if they're as useless as everyone seems to be suggesting you wouldn't have a problem with them because the people using them would be so easy to hit?

Re: Taclights: Strobe or not?
People just dont like it because the feel it gives an unfair advantage. Which it does, its a tactic. My strobe is a Sig STL 900 160 lumens strobes around 80 - 120 times per second i believe (cant quite remember) that is pretty disracting and some what blinding when running through a dark CQB hallway. Causes the other person to panic for a split second allowing me to get my rounds off slightly quicker than them. That said its always on my pistol/rifle and never left in a hallway shineing down constantly.
Anything that gives you the edge or advantage is fine or a tactic. Im not going to get pissy because theres one chap who is as fast as Mr Bolt being able to run everywhere 100x faster than me, not a great comparison but you get my meaning I hope.
However as you said it does backfire somtimes when i just get shot anyway lol

I don't see how its unfair they're annoying but I'm not really bothered about them. I also don't know whats wrong with lasers.
