Re: Do you find comms effective?
in my opinion,
Radios are only as useful as the operators.
If you're part of a team who dont communicate well, then Radios wont help you.
On the flip side, If you are a good communicating team then you should need comms to win - however they're amusing toys to use =)
Comms have never helped me win, mainly because members of my team arent good at using the comms to communicate. They'll say lots of pointless stuff down the comms but nothing worth while. Half the time they dont even answer their comms!

Re: Do you find comms effective?
Yep, I much prefer airsofting with comms, especially if you want to play with any kind of tactics and timing.
That said I'm a bit biased as I've just comes away from a Stirling game where we had 3 comms nets running; try listening in to all of that

Re: Do you find comms effective?
I'm yet to be convinced that they're of any great tactical advantage in the fast-paced CQB environments I usually play in. For the most part they're a massive obstacle for stealth, and I struggle to hold down a "talk" button, talk, and fire at the same time. It may work in small squads, but when only a few on the same team have comms, or are on the same channel, and everyone else is playing lone-ranger style, it's a bit pointless.

Re: Do you find comms effective?
I find comms useless, shouldnt have wasted my money on a radio
Lady Astor (first woman MP in the House of Commons): "Mr Churchill, if you were my husband, I'd put poison in your tea."
Winston (getting unsteadily to his feet): "Madam, if I were your husband ... I'd drink it."

I find them very useful.
A month ago playing capture the flag I was running with the flag back to our base, team mate saw 3 opfor through the windo heading towards me and gave me heads up. I ran round the corner expecting them and nailed the lot.

Re: Do you find comms effective?
Comms are brilliant so long as everyone that's using them uses them effectively. Think I'll be giving all of our comms using guys a bit of a pep-talk prior to gz along the lines of "Keep it short, precise and useful! Otherwise stay quiet."

Re: Do you find comms effective?
It can be frustrating when you are on a channel and somebody either has voxcast on (every sound is then transmitted) or you end up with somebody shouting down the headset when you really dont need it.
On the flip side though, i find that being able to communicate with HQ, your muckers, and other team mates can be successful. Last year as Delta commanders, our team HAD to use radios. It helped us keep in contact with what was going on, how the game was playing out, and who needed help where. With a decent and proper net on the go, not only does finding fellow team members become easier, it means elements can be detatched and plans formulated, whilst in totally different areas. Numerous times i have managed to bring in a perfect flank manouver whilst a small part of the team is engaging from 180 degrees, drawing more and more of the enemy to join in that part of the fight. Then it is a simple case of walking up from the back, and shooting people in the back.
Having your own net is a good idea, but can be frustrating too. If you need to get in touch with somebody you cant put a radio to, then you might as well not be using it! Saying that though, it does mean that you can speak to people without the dramas of other people getting involved.
And to the people who scan the radio waves.... Thats not very sportman like! It may be a tactic used in the real world, but thats just not playing fair!

Re: Do you find comms effective?
Our last outing was our first using comms, it brought a whole new dimension to the game! Talk about pwnership of the battlefield! We managed to stealthily guide a small team behind enemy lines, providing smoke and suppressive fire as and when requested, with spotters for the sniper team. It's only drawback was when a stray bb destroyed my ptt button! Throat mics seem to be the way forward!! So in answer to your original Q- yes very effective! Like real life battlefield!! ( just need airstrikes now!!)

Nope because 90% of people have rubbish radios, absolutely no comms discipline and can't communicate to save their lives. In my experience if used 100% of the time at least 70% of transmissions are useless garbage.
If you're a small team with some organisation then they are useful, and at milsim games they're kind of necessary.
This in a nutshell. I really don't care you're off to the burger van at 12:30, listening to you breathing for 10 mins because you're laid on the transmit button or listening to you waffle on for 20 mins because you can't find your gas! Most of the comms result in chit chat, blocking the channel for actual useful info.
My team went for private comms in the end due to the above

Re: Do you find comms effective?
How do people sort out tactics without coms???
We have radios that work, on a different frequency to all the crap, so we can at least try and put a plan forward. Bearing in mind this is Airsoft and people do tend to die quite frequently. Without trying you get no where and at least we can re sporn.

Re: Do you find comms effective?
Generally as soon as we get put into teams I sort out who (that I'm with) has a radio and what we can do with it.
Last time I went to play there were enough of us with comms that the marshals were able to call Game-on/over over the radio rather than shout and hope it was heard, and the team were able to synchronize and address where needed focus, regarding different objectives. They're pretty useful. And elsewise, you can just use them to insult your mates.

Re: Do you find comms effective?
Me and a few others use the VHF/UHF motorola Gp68 radio so range and clarity are excellent, and yes our site has a license that covers all members to use them. As said for ambushes or flanking manoeuvres they are great.
When all else fails insulting each other is just as much fun as winning! After all it's just a game.
