ICS L85A2 shots dropping short.

As the title says, my shots are dropping short.

To give you an idea of how short, I can usually shoot straight up to about 60m, they're dropping at about 15. It's almost as though the hop suddenly swivels 180 degrees and causes the BB to go down instead of up.

It's not every single shot, it happens maybe 15 times out of 40 in a random sequence of shots.

When it happens the motor sounds different, similar to when a motor is screwed into the gearbox too far, it sounds really whiney, like it's working over-time.

I know it isn't the hop blocking the barrel, I know it isn't a mag feeding issue, I know it isn't a lack of compression in the cylinder.

I'm thinking the gears might be slipping on the piston, that would explain the noise made and the performance decrease. Whine from the gears spinning without the piston and shots dropping short because the piston fails to travel the full length of the cylinder.

But! Both the gears and the piston are showing little to no wear at all, so I can't understand it...

Anyone got any ideas?

I've got some new bits and bobs coming at some point next week, they might even get here tomorrow morning. Once I've fitted them and had another bash at solving the issue, if I still haven't figured it out I'm going to ship it off to... Somewhere... I'm guessing I can't name other shops and stuff, right? Anyway, "somewhere" will likely be able to sort it out for me, I'd just rather fix it myself if any of you have any suggestions as to what the issue might be.

Oil on your BBs? maybe a rogue drop of oil got into a mag or the hop up unit or something?

I've had the gun apart quite a lot over the past few days, I've never had this issue before.

It's shooting as though there's a massive loss of airflow, I just can't figure out where it is. I'd bet money on it being nothing to do with oil, but I'll have it apart again tomorrow morning and make sure everything's clean as a whistle before reassembling it. See if that helps anything.
