Is there any way to do this without opening the gearbox?

Re: Removing a selector plate
It can be done with a version 2 for sure. Its a cheats way I use sometimes. Pretty sure Ive done it with a V3 as well.
It requires a bit of gentle flexing and persuasion though, which if you arent careful could lead to a breakage.
section 24 of the 1968 Act

1)It is an offence for a person under the age of eighteen to purchase an imitation firearm
2)It is an offence to sell an imitation firearm to a person under the age of eighteen.

Re: Removing a selector plate
depends on the gearbox/selector plate - G&G ones pop right off if you remove the cut-off spring. You need to remove the safety lever and the ARL from my G&P box to get it off though.
