can the self shimming gears in this gearbox be manually shimmed or would i have to replace the gear set?

Are you suggesting that the springs can be replaced with shims?

I suppose you could, but that would be an ugly solution and unlikely to be any kind of improvement.

You can really only shim one side of the self shimming gears, but to get anywhere near perfect shimming, you'll need gears designed to be shimmed.

Why do you want to get rid of the 'self-shimming- part?

Have seen a couple of guns with the springs removed and shims in their place .cant see the point realy unless you are going for a very high Rof monster . Even then it is quistionable . But to answer the initial quistion , yes it is possible on the standard gears .

you can shim them just turn the spring guide bits the other way around on the gears's axles and shim as standard

Sorry that makes no sense. If you leave the spring in (either way round) it will act as a spring; giving the same function of 'self-shimming.

Unless you mean remove the spring but use the plastic part, but didn't say?

You have to remove the spring altogether and replace the equivalent length with something else.

Sorry was rushing out at the time :P , ok you can shim VFC gearsets , you remove the springs and turn the caps around and sit them on the gears axles, the gears can them be shimmed as a standard gear set.

No worries. It must take a stack load of shims to do this though

nope the spring caps act as the axle collar you would find on any other gear set, so just needs the same amount of shims as any other gears

Only it can't do. If it was the same length as the 'collar' on a standard gear then there would be no travel for the spring to take up.

                          Never a truer post....

As for the OP, the stock VFC gears are fine for normal applications. Not the quietest in the world, but more than suitable. I wouldn't use them for a more specialised build though
