what's the difference between metal bushings and metal bearings?

Bushings are solid metal/plastic
Bearings are an inner and outer ring supported by ball bearings.

Exactly that, Untill youve shimmed up a gearbox with bearings and a gearbox with bushings, youll never know how truely free the gears are when fit in bearings. People talk about bushings being safer but unless the bearings you fit are faulty they will last just as long as the bushings. Remeber to oil the bushings when you install them, and try to install them fully and evenly and using bearing lock.

Different bushings and bearings from different manufactuers are all different sizes, its worth going over the shimming when changing the bushings to what ever you choose.

Its talked about as the first thing you should do but actually its one of the harder things you can do becuase if you get the shimming wrong, theres more harm been done than plastic bushings ever would.
