Re: cleaning a gearbox
I think they mean clean it as in give it a wipe to get rid of grease and dirt build up =]
I'm not sure on the petrol though but why would you want to use that anyway? Just get a q-tip and give the GB a good clean to get rid of dirt.

Re: cleaning a gearbox
ive used meth spirits once in my mp5 gearbox and it all worked a treat cleaned it all up
but id dig dipper into using and fuel based liquid to clean it if in doubt just use good old engine cleaner from halford's if its good enough for motorbike carboreters it'll more then good enough for a mech box

Or just use water. Does the job well if you put some effort into it.

Re: cleaning a gearbox
I've been using water since day one and it's worked wonders. Yes it takes longer to dry but it gives a good clean and costs f**k all.

Re: cleaning a gearbox
I would be tempted not to use deisel in G/Box as it is designed to ignite under compression, the exact thing that your G/Box is designed to produce!
It's an unlikely event but it could happen!?!
Cheers

TKOS i cant amagine an "empty" GB will have much rubber and it get wiped down after so i think petrol will be fine:D

Re: cleaning a gearbox
No, but a assembled firing gearbox will have rubber in it, and anything left on the gears may eventually work its way to the O ring. Best not to take chances IMO
