WE 1911A1 Grip safety/hammer problem
18 August, 2010, 18:58
Right, I'm at my wits end with this, so hopefully one of you fine folks can help me get my pistol fixed.
The short version is: I took the gun apart to sand and polish it but when I put it all together again the hammer didn't function properly, not going all the way forward and usually taking two trigger pulls to do anything. The safety selector has broken, could that be the cause?
I've cleaned up the frame and the parts, played with the 3 pronged plate thingimy and now I've managed to end up with it functioning when I either leave the grip safety off or don't touch it, but if I press it in the hammer sticks half way and the gas vents out the barrel.
Is there anything I can do with nearly little fixing skills or will I just have to give up and send it to get repaired?
Thanks very much,
H

Re: WE 1911A1 Grip safety/hammer problem
It sounds to me like you have inserted the leaf spring ( that 3 pronged thingy) incorrectly.
Try this.... remove the leaf spring, make sure the hammer is lowered the safety is on safe and the grip safety is in place then insert the leaf spring making sure the legs are pressing down onto the rear of the trigger bar/ sear etc. then slide the mainspring housing back into the grip frame to hold the leaf spring in place. it`s harder for me to explain than to do it.If in doubt look on you tube for a video walk through of the re assembly of a colt 1911.
hope this helps.

Ok, checked the leaf spring, seems to be all right. It's going into place no bother and engaging the bits it should be, but still no joy

Re: WE 1911A1 Grip safety/hammer problem
Hi,
Just to repeat on my earlier post. If the pistol was working fine before dissasembly and you did not loose or break any parts then it must be assembled incorrecty.
take it apart again and start from scratch. There are plenty of assembly guides on `you tube`.
Best of luck.

Like I said, the safety switch did break and is now MIA
I know that the parts are assembled correctly otherwise, this is all I can think of.

Re: WE 1911A1 Grip safety/hammer problem
I did have an issue with the hammer not locking back or going to half cock so I did bend the leaf spring slightly to resolve this. I think I bent it a little when I first had issues but it didn't seem to make a difference.
Should I look into finding a replacement leaf spring?
Thanks for the help everyone

nah just bend it back should be ok but it may be a couple of times to strip it before you get it back to normal
