Custom Body Help!

Hey guys, I've been thinking of doing this for a while- my Maruzen L96 is boring me now, and I wanted to make a custom body for it, but I'm not too sure how! I thought maybe using strong foam, then coating it in several layers of plastic, with the internals inside... what do you guys think?
By the way, the body I'm trying to make is something like the Halo 3 Beam Rifle, far-fetched I know, but theoretically it should be possible :D
