Non linear springs - which way?
9 November, 2012, 19:33
So which way do you guys install your non-linear springs? Is there a proper way? Does it make any difference?
I would imagine that the end with the narrower spacing between the coils would go towards the back of the gearbox? But on the other hand, surely physics dictates that the amount of work done by the motor would be the same either way?
Any advice would me much appreciated
(mods if you feel that this is in the wrong section, feel free to move it)

I fail to see how it makes any difference either way, but that's the way I install springs.

The tighter coils go onto the spring guide to prevent the spring getting caught and jamming.

Re: Non linear springs - which way?
there may be an inertia thing in play because the tighter coiled end would be heavier, a bit like having a heavy piston or light weight one but only a marginal difference if measurable at all.

Yeah, this seems like the most likely and practical reason really.
There is probably a slight inertia thing going on too, but considering the forces that are in play, I'd say that the actual weight of the spring is pretty much negligible!
