WE 1911 Mag Spring Problem

Just bought a brand new WE 1911, lent it to a friend for literally 5 minutes and he breaks both magazine springs.

I'd never used it before, or either of the mags, but it looks like the mag spring was obviously far too stiff and all sprung out the hole at the front when the mag was being loaded?

Whats the purpose of the hole at the front? Also has anyone else ever had this?
