wood varnish ! for ak handguards

Hi all, give me a pile of metal and i can work wonders with it but wood .... hmm what i want to ask the Masses is i am wanting to sand down and re-varnish my ak74 handguards as atm they are different colours
What would the best colours and makes of varnish be for the job ? tip's and advise aswell

Use a wood stain rather than a varnish mat and then rub in linseed oil to bring the life back to the wood. Use Ronseal woodstain they have a lot of colours to choose from and they are desgined for heavy usage and not just as a colouring. The colour is subjective and more difficult though. How well worn do you want it to look. The older the darker basically. basically though some sort of Deep Red. Something like a Mahogany or Cherry Wood, not Dark mahogany as that's way too dark

thats helped a lot already ! well these are my gaming grips ( at home it has a romi front set but i cant stand them to use in a game :P ) i will have a look around the local diy
