Upgrade guide Based on Maruzen type 96
6 September, 2010, 20:57
Ok guys , i'm writting this guide as there is alot of L96 threads about and info is being mixed up,
L96 manufacturer's
Maruzen type96 are the dearer version due to the internal quality control system which makes them alot more consistant compared to the other makes such as WELL/WARRIOR/UTG ...... please note , these are all made by WARRIOR but shipped to different companies and re branded, nothing else has been upgraded unless stated in the advert for the rifle ....
Stock Rifle Performance
Maruzen performance is pitted as above average for the type of rifle from stock
The FPS level is on the low side at 325-350 from the box on a .20g BB
The range on the stock rifle with .20g bb's will be around 45-50m without accuracy.
The hop unit is failry consistant for the type of unit and the adjustment set up that it has been given, from fully off and fully on with a heavier more stable ammo selection , you can tweak the stock unit for the range of about 35-42m fairly accurately but with a wide spread of shots.
Warrior L96 performance
The Fps is ranging between 400-460 from the box on a .20g BB
the range on the stock rifle is also good with a .20g bb at arounf 50-55m with accuracy.
The hop unit is a direct clone of the maruzen to a certain degree structually, but the hop rubber is alot more hard wearing giving it a longer span at higher stock levels, so with a .30 gram bb you will be hitting arounf 45-52m with fairly nice groupings but if you follow the guide's below all will increase .
Tweaks For Considoration Before Firing as Sniper
Ok please note , to get the rifle itself shooting more consistantly then stock you'll be advised to follow the steps listed below..
Cylinder-
Hop Unit
Barrel
Bolt carrier
Cylinder-- these parts need to be removed after you have learnt how to dismantle the rifle. They also need to be wiped clean of the thick grease they are coated with and replaced with more suitable ones, such as White lithium grease/spray for lubing the Spring Guide, Spring, cylinder walls ( lower half only), also silicone lube or spray for the orings on the cylinder head and also the piston head.. The lithium lube allows the moving parts more friction free travel allowing smoother action, the silicone lube allows the rubber o-ring seals to keep their air tight seal, other wise they dry out and crack.
Hop Unit-- This is the main place where the FPS is lost from the rifle due to the hop rubber also being inside and there not being a perfect air seal created so it makes each shot have different power levels each shot so no constant medium. The very first thing you do is remove the barrel from the unit and hop rubber and give a it good clean with a Light dab of silicon oil on a cut of J-cloth, then a clean piece to remove and polish.
Second is to wash the hop rubber in soapy water and allow to dry before using again, install on the inner barrel and then PTFE tape over the ledge where the inner barrel stops and the hop rubber begins, making sure that you cover both the barrel and the hop rubber with the PTFE tape, wrap around for 5 wraps and will be great.
Third, moving onto the hop unit itself, the hop arms are the parts that actually press down onto the hop rubber to create the hop effect on the bb, the type of arm you will have is the H- bar or the arm'd style , which means the bar has two thin bars on arm itself that press the hop rubber down onto the BB, between the two prongs , there should be a small gap,now with a small piece of either byro pen tube or electrical wire(2mm diameter) cut a small length to fill the gap so the hop arm is one Height level going from edge to edge, this will improve the ammount of pressure spread over the bb and make it more constant.
Final step is to re slide the barrel and hop rubber into the hop unit , use a tiny ammount of silicon oil on the hop rubber to make it slide inwards without a bubble or bulge forming being carful to re align the hop rubber with the hop arm and also making sure you don't tear the hop rubber.
Barrel-- as said above , please make sure you give the inner barrel a good and sincere clean before and after use , only use either J-cloth or Gun rag ( found in local gunsmiths or online ) to clean the barrel with as they are static free and leave no residue after cleaning, i use silicone lubebricant on the material as gives a nice shine,
Bolt Carrier-- this is where the bolt slide back and forth in and gets dirt in all the time , to clean and make this work better will make the cylinder last longer and make cocking the bolt alot easier as less friction, start with wiping all dirt and grime from the bolt carrier, once complete use brasso to smoothen and lightly shine the inner serface as this will allow lube to settle and evenly spread itself over the walls preventing sticking of the bolt or lines from bits of grit..
Rilfe Upgrade Guide
Right here are the parts that are compatible with both the WARRIOR style and MARUZEN style L96 rifles and they are all CODED with the Pss96 before the part you order
Below are a Few guides for each main FPS level desired, with consistancy improved more over FPS
350fps
Laylax pss96 110 spring for the FPS raise
Laylax or edgi or even home made barrel spacers
400fps
Laylax pss96 130 spring
Laylax or edgi or even home made barrel spacers
Laylax Dampener cylinder head with sorbothane dampener pads
Laylax or ELEMENT three stage piston and piston head
Upgraded hop unit, PDI unit Hexagon unit allow AEG tb barrels to be used internally,
450fps
Laylax pss96 140 spring
Laylax or ELEMENT three stage piston and piston head
Laylax Dampener cylinder head with sorbothane dampener pads
Laylax spring guide stopper and spring guide
Laylax or edgi or even home made barrel spacers
EDGI 6.03 barrel( without aeg hop unit ) PDI or Madbull 6.03 barrel( with PDI hop unit or the HEXEGON products unit)
Upgraded hop unit, Hexagon unit allow AEG tb barrels to be used internally,
Hop rubber Either Edgi or laylax, aeg variants if upgraded hop unit.
500fps
Laylax pss96 150 spring
Laylax or ELEMENT three stage piston and piston head
Laylax Dampener cylinder head with sorbothane dampener pads
Laylax or edgi or even home made barrel spacers
EDGI 6.03 barrel( without aeg hop unit ) PDI or Madbull 6.03 barrel( with PDI hop unit or the HEXEGON products unit)
Upgraded hop unit, Hexagon unit allow AEG tb barrels to be used internally,
Hop rubber Either Edgi or laylax, aeg variants if upgraded hop unit.
Laylax or EDGI
Laylax trigger and piston sear set or if you have the money adopt the ZERO trigger option instead( for dealing with the high fps levels )..
Other upgrade options are available from Edgi and Pdi , but the ones stated are the more affordable but yet extremely reliable variants.
And again FPS Isn't everything each stage has more internal parts listed due to the consistancy needs are alot greater then FPS ..

Do I need to oil a teflon cylinder? What lubes do you use? Is something like express gun oil ok?
Thanks for the great guide.

For the Teflon cylinder mate yes you have to lube the inside so movemnet is free an un obstructed
Also only use silicone oil and White Teflon grease but mainly silicone on the inside
Use a small and a mean small ammount to rub intothe outside of the Teflon cyclinder
But there is no real reason to upgrade until you set the rifle up correctly

Re: Upgrade guide Based on Maruzen type 96
Hopefully on subject, should a .36 BB start dropping at 40M on a 500fps gun with standard hop or does that mean not enough hop?
Great guide by the way!!!

Re: Upgrade guide Based on Maruzen type 96
with the standard hop unit and rubber mate 40-45m is about right, with off on slightly
and on .36s it should be around 360 fps if it is a 500 rifle on .2

Re: Upgrade guide Based on Maruzen type 96
Does anyone know the size/ have a spare magazine catch screw that screws into the hope up unit from the sprung piece of metal the magazine is held by ?
I'd really like to know as mine sheared off and whilst i managed to drill out the screw I can't for the life of me find a manual stating the specs of the screw.

You need to re-tap the hole mate if the screw sheered off inside the thread
Other wise if your able to get the thread out it is a 2.5 mm screw

Stainless cylinder mate just means a more smoother cocking but only slighty less friction compare. To the stock cylinder

Re: Upgrade guide Based on Maruzen type 96
Do you mean a teflon cylinder? I'm sure my stock one was stainless anyway! Teflon cylinder will make it easier to cycle the bolt and give slight fps increase due to tighter seal and smoother movement of piston. One of the last upgrades to get really.

Standard cylinder normally Alloy, mines listed as a stainless power cylinder?!?!
