Re: Private Airsoft
Im sure a couple of years ago when I was in pompey, there was a report of a woman walking her dog near some woods, only to find people with AEGs running around shooting each other, needless to say the police were called and sorted the issue (it was private land, so between the lines they did nothing), to which the local rag reported it on front page news as, wait for it!
"A Taliban training camp discovered in local woodland", made for an interesting and uninformed read really, they didnt mention the woman was actually trespassing though.
So Id recomend pay and play unless you can be 100% sure no general public is going to stray across this said private land, and definately dont do it on public land, you arent covered by public liability insurance which covers the site owner against compensation claims (which otherwise you would have to pay) upto 5000000 pounds (sometimes higher, sometimes a little lower).
section 24 of the 1968 Act
Supplying imitation firearms to minors
1)It is an offence for a person under the age of eighteen to purchase an imitation firearm
2)It is an offence to sell an imitation firearm to a person under the age of eighteen.

Interestingly though, I can name 3 proper sites that have had members of the public walking around on while I've been there, usually lost, although one did have a little used public right of way through part of it

I have played on a site with a footpath* thru it too... gawd... including 2 of my private fields...but I have rights to shut it off if I see it necessary (erm...swineflu? yea. swineflu epidemic!). :D
and I know the community...in fact one of the regular walkers helps me with electrical gun problems. :p
*footpaths and rights of ways are different, just so yano.

Re: Private Airsoft
Haha, I have always been amazed at the number of kids who skirmish in private land. Perhaps I'm being cynical, but I remember back in the day (2001) when I was 14 and used to claim on forums that we skirmished on "Private" land
. Was it fook.....

So have I, but at least when the police turn up its out of good nature and are slightly less prone to shoot on contact. And you are covered by the site insurance, so if something does happen you are covered.

Re: Private Airsoft
In terms of "innocent passerbys" X-Site regularly has random people on horseback strolling near the back of the site's CQB area less than 10 meters away from an active skirmish zone.
Still, do it on your own land away from prying eyes and if seen make sure you explain what you're doing (and don't even consider pointing your guns in their direction, or acting unfriendly and uncooperatively).
Also, I know sites are covered by third party insurance, but as Frenchy, a site owner himself stated, third party insurance does not necessarily cover you, so much as the site owner.
To qualify you need to follow the rules for saftey (most site's insurance will not cover you if you wear anything less than full face. No joke).
Additionally, to claim that compensation, you'd have to actively SUE the site for not adhering to the safety regulations set by the insurance company. Needless to say, in 99% of the cases, if you injure yourself, it's not the site's fault. You know those little discaimers they get you to sign that if you trip on a log it's your own damn fault for being a clumsy git? That gets them out of pretty much any possible liability for your own injuries.
But I digress...
Play on areas with the owner's permission, and play safe. Don't do anything stupid is the key rule.

Re: Private Airsoft
The problem with using farm land is that even if you are no-where near a footpath people sometimes wander from them, I used to live on a farm with a homemade rifle range and on one occasion whilst I was about to start shooting these people just walked straight onto the range despite it being at least 200m from the nearest footpath and having a fence, red tape and a sign round it, when I politely asked them what the F**K they were doing they simply said ..they thought this was a footpath.....mmmm I doubt that....
....Just because you use common sense doesn't mean other people will do so be careful...
Just because you can doesn't mean you should......

Re: Private Airsoft
The site I play at is rented from the land owner, the landowner seems to love collecting hay from a shed on game days only, so he drives through the middle of a fire fight then starts shifting hay in the middle of the game arena. Once he got a shock when about 5 of us came round the corner and heard shuffeling and noise coming from the barn, which is typically out of play but some people insist on using it as cover, but due to the hay we cant use pyro in there (funny ol thing that), so hearing these noises the 5 of us stacked up and did an aggressive entry, no shooting until targets were aquired but lots of screaming, shouting and my 500lumen taclight on strobe, to which we were met with a rather wide eyed and bemused farmer with 5 guns pointed at him, we started laughing and he just said in a dead pan way "the drugs and bombs are over there fellas" and he went on his merry way.
Lucky we didnt shoot though.
