If you could buy maybe a broken slr or broken digital camera
and dismantle it and get this little bit off it

    (the white screw part)

and attach it to your rifle
you would in theory be able to use that tripod

im thinking that i should either be able to modify the mounting or get an insert with the correct thread from the local engineers merchant.
ideal way would be to attach a ris mount on the top of the tripod and a small rail on the underside of the dragunov, but we will see how it goes!!
ps excellent to have someone else who doesnt think this idea sucks!!!

Normal camera tripod threads are 1/4 inch Whitworth threads. "Whitworth" is the shape of the thread, and so is important to specify.
This is close to 1/4-20 UNC, but with 55 degree thread angle as opposed to UNC's 60 degree angle. 1/4-20 UNC is more readily available, and may be compatible for "non-critical" use.

UNC is similar to ISO Metric, but UNC uses imperial measurements. 1/4 inch = 6.35mm, but M6 would be way too far off to work properly - too many threads per inch for a start.

To add insult to injury, you're doing it to a Dragunov! If it weren't for my chronic emotional constipation, I'd cry!
