Re: Moderators should be more strict
Guys, guys, guys!
Let's all just sit back and relax FFS!
It's just an internet forum, where people express opinions. Every contributor here has a valid point.
Hunter101, with your original post. People can see where you're coming from (maybe (by your own admission) a little too opinionated), but that's what it's all about. Expressing opinions!
BALBOSA, correct again. New members join forums as they have questions, and as much as we may not appreciate some kid joining after a game of COD just to see what the best sniper rifle is and sticking that question in the first place he sees. (There's a mods job right there.....move the thread!)
SavageWolf, great idea and I know you've already expressed an interest in becoming a mod (Lord only knows why, as you'd have to deal with all of this moaning!)
Boo-Sabum-Ben, a couple of questions for you. Where would we be without rules? (France!) And where would we be with too many rules? (Germany!) :D
Let's not all start 'cat-calling' simply because we disagree.
There's a scammer operating openly on this forum. Please be aware of who you're dealing with.

A little bit of common sense is needed. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that for example, you have to use a template for sales threads.
You'd be surprised (or maybe not) how many shirty PMs we get after removing peoples' incorrectly posted sales threads as it is. You're right, I mean they only have to look at all the other threads to see what the format is, yet people still fail time after time.

Haha. Fair point! I didn't mean banish rules totally and let chaos reign supreme. I just meant we can argue about the rules and how perfect it should be forever and it won't change diddly! It's just the way life is.
I apologise if I sound like I'm angry! I'm at the tyre shop right now to find out I just wasted £100 on a replacement wheel that was bent. Not a great start to the day!

Re: Moderators should be more strict
I guess this thread does add weight to hunter's argument, although banning would be a little strong. And please, no flaming!

Re: Moderators should be more strict
Here's the solution...
Moderators and assistants "get together" for a few days (collectively or singularly) or a week, going through pages of duplicate/ similar threads, and merge the posts? It's possible to have say, 5 posts from this thread moved into another one. Then we'd have one large thread with all the info on.
Job done. Easier said than done? Yes, but not if more staff are recruited. Even recruit temps that volunteer to do this, and demote them later.
Second point... on my forum, I've installed a modification which literally forces users to read the forum rules otherwise they cannot physically view threads etc. You also need to click to accept the rules. If this user does not use the template, for example, they're given an infraction straight away. Why? Because if they've read the rules and clicked to accept them, there's no excuses. If they do it again, another infraction is given and their "status" is reset - so that they must accept the rules again.

Do you ignore their nasty replies or respond to them? In your position I'd probably ignore... They've broken the rules, and in doing so their posts/etc have been deleted/etc. How can you feel pissed off when you've done something wrong, knowing about it (because you've been told via pm/ warning) and then clicking to see the rules, and they've been there all along.
Holy hell, didn't I post a possible solution just above? Hehe.
Edit 1212 - Fizzy link doesn't work (deleted thread).

Re: Moderators should be more strict
I was thinking that before. A kind of acceptance of the rules solution and now I remember where I saw it!
Thanks Gaffa.

Yeah, thread's gone. Some guy asking if he can sell stuff on here, so you can guess why it got closed
As for the PMs, generally I just ignore them (although that's quite a hard thing to do for me
) but occasionally they may get something along the lines of, "Well, if you'd have been bothered to read the rules or even look at other sales threads, you wouldn't have to repost it would you?" If it's just verbal I would report it for the Admins to deal with, but l haven't had any that bad (yet)

Thanks Gaffa.
Because lets be honest, if they have literally clicked to view the rules (in order to accept them) then you must be a right cock not to have read them - it's called digging yourself a deeper hole. Well it is really.

Yet... Ahh the word which depicts the chances of inevitability.
The other problem you get is that people sign up to the forum wanting to sell off all their kit, and their first (or <10) post doesn't use the template or whatever, which causes problems. I've set our forum up so that you must have been registered at least 7 days and have made 15 posts (which will increase to 14 and 30 posts), before you can actually access the classifieds section. It's a similar sort of thing to arnies, and allows people to get acclimatised (a little) to the forum etc. and of course, by looking at the sellers posts, it is possible to somewhat gauge how genuine they are - even though this is not as easy as made out to be in any circumstance.

Re: Moderators should be more strict
I don't think it's a matter of 'strict' per se, it's a matter of consistency. Some mods are quite happy to let some things pass, other mods can hand out the warnings like candy.
I think it goes back to the numbers of mods tbh, there just aren't enough. Doesn't help that a few of the people who tried to contribute the most and add their accumulated knowledge to the forum either ended up being banned or got so fed up they left for pastures new.
Sooner or later you have to admit, this is the only major forum having these issues.
