The logical physics would surely be that an object of a heavier weight can't travel as fast as an object of lesser weight when the same force is applied to both?
im just thinking out loud here, but what if, because of the higher weight, the bb had more momentum, which made up for the difference in fps?

i heard once that the low fps high range was due to how well the piston, cylinder (and those other little bits in that area) were air sealed... the better the seal the less air can escape meaning that more gets forced through the air nozzel at a higher pressure... so the bb fires further regardless of how fast the spring pushes the piston forward.

The extra weight will help it carry momentum, hence peoples aregument that heavier bb's go further, but the speed will still be lower.

          @zulu

Yes exaxtly. But what he is saying is that the fps was the same for both.

momentum = mass * velocity. Therfore, assuming your gearbox transfers the same amount of energy per shot, then if you increace the weight of the bb, the fps must be reduced as a result.

The only reasons I can think of for getting the result mentioned above, would be if one set of bbs were less well made, and thus allowed more air to escape around the sides of the ball or... if the hop was too high, and effectively buffered the two rounds to a similar speed. Either way, the difference between a .2 and a .3 should be quite noticable in terms of fps, regardless of anything else.

The reason heavier BBs supposedly travel further than lighter ones is that they are less affected by air resistance. The faster something travels, the more rapidly it is decelerated by air resistance. By taking the same surface area at the same momentum, but a lower speed, it will thus be decelerated at a slower rate initially, and hence be more stable and carry that energy further. Anyway. Thats an entierly different debate all together.

As GH0ST said, it is all about the hop. If you look at how far a bb travels with no hop, and then you turn the hop up, you can easily get twice, three, four times the range out of the gun. The better your hop rubber, and the more accurately the design of the mechanism allows you to adjust the hop, the more flat trajectory you can get out of your gun. FPS is important, in that it is the easiest way to make the bb go further, by adding more energy. But for really accurate or long shooting, the hop is more important, as long as you have ~200fps to actually get the round moving at a half decent pace in the first place. The higher the fps, the harder it is to set the hop at the perfect balance between rising and dropping, so in fact, it is easier to maximise the hops potential with a slower set up. Of course, a perfectly set up gun with an M100 would definitely out perform one tuned perfectly to work with an M90, provided you used correct ammunition to go with each.

My bad people to stop the argument now. It was cronoed with 0.2's both times. I just happened to be using 0.3's inbetween the cronoing so thought it was my rounds.

I was watching a guy at the weekend with a tm G36 with a tb barrel and 260fps. The gun looked like it had been burried for 50 years but had massive range and I don't think he could miss if he tried.

my old tm m14 ran at around 300fps - was out ranging 90% of stuff on the field easily.

m14 has the best hop, its probably the best platform for range etc.

Stay away from m4s, thier hop up sucks (with the exception of a few)

Ironically out of all my guns, the one that has the most range is an mp5

I do love my mp5, I think it outranges my old G3, the only thing is, the hop up lever being on the outside has a habit of knocking itself out of place, and as a result i find myself resetting it after each death.

Kind of interesting though, proves barrel length isn't as important in airsoft, perhaps even the opposite, as they use the same ported cylinder an m4 (100mm longer barrel though)

                        my AEG am bestest!!

in all seriousness the m14 does have a very good hop unit.

it would be very interesting to see the maximum range TM aeg's can go to with a stock gun.
