Airsoft - Official Sport/Standardisation
26 April, 2010, 17:44
Here we go, it's time for another controversial/hypothetical situation discussion/open warfare thread. *delete as appropriate.
This time, the subject is,
"Should Airsoft be standardised across the UK as an official sport, with sanctioned rules?"
If a players governing body were set up, "official" standardised rules could be established. Players could apply for membership to the governing body and given a player ID card for use at sites and potentially purchasing RIFs.
Benefits could be:
Standard and consistent FPS limits on Airsoft guns based on their type and the gaming area/site.
Effects of this would be no ambiguity about the power of guns being used at a certain site.
A type 1 site would be a large site of x area, 50/50 cover/open area ratio.
A type 2 site would be a compact site of x area, dense cover and blind corners etc.
Obviously these criteria could be tweaked and sites across the country could adhere to them and this is only an example. I'd say 4 or 5 categories of site could be established that would cover most bases.
The FPS of guns used in each site type could be tailored to suit, but this would mean rules were consistent and predictable throughout the country, meaning no disappointment for travelling players.
Obviously having a players registration card could mean hot guns, known cheats or unsporting players could be tracked, and repeat offenders could even be blanket banned.
Of course, teams could also be registered and even leagues could be set up, allowing players to visit other sites etc.
You guys probably get the idea...
What do you think, like the idea of standardisation but not necessarily competition? Don't like standardisation? Maybe the player ID card is a good idea, you could even have RIFs registered to you by serial number for security?
Go nuts...

Re: Airsoft - Official Sport/Standardisation
I think it sounds fantastic, but unfeasible, how much money would that cost to set up? and then not everyone would want to be a member etc...

Of course, it would cost some money... I guess sites may be willing to pay a membership fee that might well be passed on to players somehow. Might be profitable in the long run?
Of course, non-members could be treated very much like rentals or your average walk on player now?

Re: Airsoft - Official Sport/Standardisation
Standardisation of FPS wouldn't be a bad idea, although I think most open woodland sites are 350fps now anyway. I also like the idea of possibly banning (or at least suspending) those known to persistantly break the rules, whether it be non-hit taking or running hot guns. What I wouldn't like to see are restrictions against the casual/hobby player

Additionally, although it might not be practical, members could register individual guns against their ID card, potentially avoiding having to chrono at every site etc.
I guess this could also make people more accountable for illegal sales and such... Probably a step too far though, just to avoid having to go through chronoing...

Re: Airsoft - Official Sport/Standardisation
problem with that idea is that i could easily get a gun and put it on an ID card as being 328 fps, then upgrade the hell out of it, however it will still say on the card it is doing 328

Get busted, get banned...
Might be hard to enforce any kind of rulings over this though... I guess you'd have to be verified when applying for membership... All non members would be subject to chrono I guess...

i think it would be good idea as it would give us a better image to the general public rather than "those idiots up the hill with the bb guns" sort of thing

Re: Airsoft - Official Sport/Standardisation
but it would be an awful lot of hassle for anyone in the process of upgrading a gun, having to constantly geting it checked and recronod frequently

this sounds like a great idea as it would show that we are organised and not just a bunch of people playing in the forest and scaring people with rif

Re: Airsoft - Official Sport/Standardisation
This sounds exactly like what I want. Instead of just going to my local site and having a laugh, I get to pay even more money to do the same thing! Except this allows me to avoid the HASSLE of spending twenty seconds getting my gun chronoed when I arrive!
What next, national teams, club strips, and TV coverage? Cos that would work.
- confirmed Mr.cool coolest of the cool airsofters.
