Sniper Back-Ups...
16 June, 2010, 11:58
I always see a bunch of threads on here asking about "sniper back ups"... You know, when you have a sniper rifle you need to carry a gun that is compact has, great range, accuracy and ROF...
My question is, bearing in mind this is airsoft and the effective ranges don't vary
that
much, if you are carrying this AEG with great range accuracy and ROF, are you even bothering to play as a sniper? Do you even use your rifle at all? Do you think, that as a sniper, sites should enforce rules and semi only restrictions on all weapons you are carrying?
Just a thought mind, no need to get heated about it and I'm not saying I am behind anything in particular...

Re: Sniper Back-Ups...
I think that sniper's should be limited to pistols or small smg e.g mp7 or an mp5 at a push

A good point mate-
My view is,
Snipers should be at a higher fps than average aeg, with higher range than a aeg, also locked to semi or bolt action.
By having a side arm, normally a pistol it needs to be effective against an AEG, under 30metres.
I use my sniper alot , but when moving around or a chance of contact under 30m then I'd use my side Arm.
To me the whole idea as a sniper is to dig in, looking out to an open area and wait.. If by chance you get caught by a sneaky patrol then Use back up.
I think many new snipers move in a game way too much.

How many people with 'sniper rifles' actually play as a 'sniper' though...

To be honest, I don't think that many , I think a few do . And credit to them.
Other newer players who get a rifle are proberbly "game branded" it's cool to have a sniper and your invinceable- your not.
They take it with them but use a "back up" which is normally there primary aeg, g36c, m4. This defeats the point.
I'm planning on using a mp7... Small compact ok ROF.. Perfect.
My main role will always be to snipe.
Sniping truely is laying still for an hour waiting for people to cone to you.

Re: Sniper Back-Ups...
Carrying a second larger size gun is a complete ballache when im sniping. Only tried it once, and it was a complete pain (borrowed Dans MP5K). Was actually a hinderance.
Sticking to a standard sidearm (my FN5-7), its does the job fine. Though im still giving thought to a HiCapa Xtreme, a full auto pistol might be a good choice. Will wait to see what the new Marui G18C is like first.

Re: Sniper Back-Ups...
Been airsofting for a few years and i've just bought an L96. my Aeg is getting fixed as the motor went kaput. So this weekend i'll probably be just using the L96 and pistol. Not sure about the rest of you but i think this is probably the best way to go, as you can't just sling the sniper and run about like you normally would. Never really tried sniping but it has always been appealing to me.

Re: Sniper Back-Ups...
Which is more effective though? Sat in an LUP waiting for hours, and nothing happening, or supporting your team, suppressing enemies, and eliminating threats at a distance further than the range of AEGs. It's all well and good to be a "real" sniper, but will it actually help your team, or just your ego?
(These aren't my views, just playing devils advocate.)

Re: Sniper Back-Ups...
To be honest, digging yourself in as a sniper would in real life is not really relevant in airsoft. The effective range of an L96 in real life is far greater than say the L85 whereas in airsoft the range is only marginally better. There's no point in sitting waiting away from the action with the enemy in your sights if you can't actually hit them.

I tend to split from my team and find a point where I have good field of view near opposition so I can support my team with supression and tactful knowledge .
I keep in radio contact alot.

Re: Sniper Back-Ups...
That's kind of what i'll be trying to do this weekend. I can see why you wan't to split from you're team but as i said before you have to be able to hit the opposition.

Re: Sniper Back-Ups...
an interesting question BEN. - I should be packing but this is far more interesting.
As you probably all know - I don't carry a side arm when I snipe - don't even own one.
But then I run a low fps rig so I don't have to worry about MED.
In RL they would be carrying an assault rifle as well as the sniper rifle. - I was thinking of giving this a go when I get down to GZ next - but I am not sure how well it would work. - it would be another large weapon to lug about and would prob get in the way.
A pistol is certainly a great option to have - particularly for the higher fps shooters out there.
but you have to ask - how often do they use it? If I was using my back up more than my main weapon - I would have to re-think my strategy.
a side arm/ back up - should be exactly that; not a primary weapon.
now of course you are going to get some games where you are simply forced to use the pistol more than the rifle.

Re: Sniper Back-Ups...
in real life, sniper rifles are only REALLY used for Recon and even then they only get used if they need to be, its just not practical. A barret 50 cal weighs about 33lb in real life. COD has spoiled the image of shooting and markmanship. You look through Nocs and the scope on your gun to check out the enemy base and then move in about 2 weeks later, on foot.
Assualt rifles nowadays are so accurate over range that they are mostly used. Dont get me wrong, snipers are good for 1km+ combat but it takes a LOT of skill to adjust in the field.
AEG snipers are just downright stupid!

You best go tell the army they're doing it wrong then.
