University airsoft societies
14 January, 2011, 16:04
I know this has been touched on in the past, but at the moment its very current to me so Im putting out there again. I know that several universities have airsoft societies, and a number of others are trying to set them up- I am personally trying to establish an airsoft society down here at Sussex uni. What i am wondering about is the demand for some sort of inter-university airsoft competition, and if so what would it be. Also, do any forum members who are active in the running of a uni air soc mind getting in touch with me regarding the kind of rules you lads have to work with? Cheers

Re: University airsoft societies
I'm at the University of Southampton and know we have a society. I haven't headed out with them yet, but that should be happening later this year. The University of Portsmouth also has one.
There used to be that 8-man thing which did an inter-uni weekender. Various objectives/missions for which the teams were scored and then a trophy at the end. That's probably about as viable as any competition could get between unis due to the sheer distance between them, and the obvious travel restrictions/limitations. It would probably be possible to rent out a site for the weekend, and do a similar thing. It's more a matter of where and numbers.

Re: University airsoft societies
I know a guy at my uni (Hertfordshire) is trying to start up a society, and me and a friend are going to try and help him do that. I think it would be a fantastic idea to have inter uni tournaments, as it would help to make it a legitimate sport and would increase membership; as much as students enjoy having fun, the majority who look to join a sports society are looking for some form of competition too, so inter uni tournaments would be a great thing to set up.

Re: University airsoft societies
I'm part of the Loughborough airsoft society, just started up this year. Got just over 30 members, and we've managed about 3 official games with good attendance.
Anyway, standard rules are -
No guns in halls
No pyro in halls
When meeting up on campus to go to a game, only allowed to be in BDUs, no webbing etc visible.
Just generally sensible with kit.
In house society rules are standard common sense, plus some kick out of the society rules if you're caught selling RIFs to people who shouldn't be buying them (or buying them if you shouldn't be)
That 8 man tournament is still running, we're hopefully sending a team down this year.

is it?
i had email a while back, but since the swansea airsoft society dosnt have enough players with there own kit to form an 8-man team. so i didnt reply to the email.
if you could provide an update i'd appreciate it...might be able to encourage a few to kit themselves out

I got the same email for Teesside, 8-man is on again this year on the weekend of the 6th of March, running both days.
So far the uni clubs going are: Warwick, Portsmouth, Stafford, U.W.E, Nottingham, Trent and Reading.

Re: University airsoft societies
Yeah, our chairman just let us know the other day, since we're fairly new, we'll only just be able to get 8 with our own kit. But if you can, I think the deadline for booking in is early February. £55 each - so £440 for a whole team, and I think you can take "reserves" but if they're playing they have to pay the full £55 as well.
As far as I know, there are other games to get involved in going on as well, not just the tournament game, over the site at the Grange and the nearby RAF base.
Although if you've been I suspect it'll be fairly similar.
But yeah, from what I know there are going to be about 6ish uni's competing.
Let me know if you want any more info.

Re: University airsoft societies
University of Derby Airsoft Team UDAT have been running for very nearly a year now, fortunatly very few of us live in halls but for the fortunate ones that do, we store our guns in a loft conversion of a house where all 4 members are part of the team managment.
no need to go anywhere near campus for us as we travel from the inner city so we just confide to public law rather than site security.
we've looked into the 8 man tourniment before but its seemed to never go any further, i'll take a PM & some info if in fact theres otherwise

you just missed me and my mate who are finishing soon. Would recommend going to the different x site venues though if you have someone to drive. They run some brilliant sites

Re: University airsoft societies
One thing you must know is that fat men will deride you, disrespect your abilities as a player, ignore your presence other than to boss you around, and generally cheat as much as possible to beat you simply because you are a student. They will consider you 'training fodder' or less.
Which makes effortlessly thrashing them so much more satisfying in the end.

dunno to be honest. this year I have actually had to work so not been socialising as much as I would like.
Think the gaming society do airsoft trips now and then. so could be a few airsofters around
