It's called the 'front stock ferrule' and you should be able to just lever it off (gently) with a pick, chisel or flat-head screwdriver depending upon your level of mechanical sympathy.

Followed these guidlines, and sure enough, it came off.

Naturally, I had people on Facebook telling me I needed a completely different part, and they had one spare... Someone even said I needed to heat the stock!

Sold! Sanded off G&G's horrible finish - so unbelievably rough it took a day to remove the tooling marks - and given the first of many coats of boiled linseed oil. Before, and after:

My little beauty
TM m14 olive now with prommy eg inner, r hop, infinity high torque motor running at 335fps
Vision king optic on low mounts, surefire 7.62 qd silencer, comb raiser and as had to take off flash hider and front sight replaced with pdi socom style sight.

Puresilvers old M14. Darkened the wood a little, and also kryloned the heat shield brown to make it look like an issue one.

Yours looks pretty close to mine after I had stained it. The rest is a stock finisher and then a sheen control to take the edge off the shine.
