Fuses can help prevent against faults as stated, the first thing I do with all my guns is rewire and take the fuse out. If your gun is set up properly they don't need fuses.
Also is the noise continuous when you pull the trigger of just as each shot is fired?
I would try backing the screw half a turn then give the trigger a quick squeese.
Repeat if necessary. Shot burst. Mainly because if the motor is to low you could shred the pinion if they are barely touching.

I've just rewired to the back and added deans connectors, although i'm keeping the fuse for now, even though it is a pain having one with a crane stock, however when a certain mosfet website in the UK gets the old chips back in stock i will be buying an ares 'fet from there. And mosfets act as fuses right?

Not all, some have built in protection others dont.
