Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston?
9 February, 2011, 19:55
As I have my mp5 decided to strip its piston I went on a search for a new one, along my way I found the Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston. Looks quite appealing to me but is it worth £20? It would be going in to a fair hi speed set up when all the parts come. Has any one had any experience, are they worth it, how do they perform? ect etc

Re: Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston?
TM stock piston with all the 'mod's', AoE, Swiss cheese and SS if you need too.

Re: Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston?
Before buying a new piston - you need to find out why the current one is stripping.
For some reason, the piston has not returned by the time the gears came back around.
What's the current and intended set up?

Re: Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston?
I'm sure you are matey, but for £10 or so, you can get a TM Piston, Piston head and stock spring (~280fps). This is great because at the end of the day, a piston is probably the easiest thing to change in any gearbox, and it's one of the gearbox components which you'd rather die, than something else.
Eg, it's better if a £10 piston broke than a £30 gearset, for example. And you can buy some gearsets for more than £100.
So you could sell on the piston head and spring and make, well, almost all of your money back.
The TM pistons are not the best in quality, but are very capable of running for a good number of rounds and have actually been noted to last longer than some "reinforced" or "polycarbonate" pistons.

Re: Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston?
For high speed you need more than an M85 spring or you will be getting premature engagement. Then you could have paid £50 for a piston and it wouldnt make any difference it will get chewed. You could spend the extra tenner on some shims and grease and set the gear box up properly then you won't be getting chewed pistons.
Other mods as Jag says need looking at. You wouldn't catch me paying that for a piston. I run SHS and Element pistons to 40 a sec without problem.

Re: Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston?
My currency setup was stock (ICS) not to sure why it stripped tbh. The motor pinion was damaged to, the gears are pristine. May have been caused by a bad shim job? Im not all to sure too be honest.
The set up I want to run is:
M95 spring
modular hi seep gears
systema MP5 high cycle cylinder set
Was going to be a modify High speed piston (Tm now I guess)
9.6v large
Motors got the stock ICS one but I do have systema magnum, been told its best to use a stock motor with hi seed gears. Please do correct me if Im wrong. Im tacking this with a very open mind
I don't want anything too over the top. Later one I would invest in a mosfet and low resistance wiring

Re: Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston?
Really with the standard motor and a 9.6. If you correct aoe and remove the second tooth from the back of the piston as a start. You would need to check this though, because in several gear boxes I have done I have had to remove the third and half the fourth to stop the sector gear clashing with the piston teeth at pickup.
When you get your fet and 16awg or decent wiring, if you already have the Magnum, you must use it. It will make you grin.
But again, if you have the gear box set up correctly you may well need more than an M95 to run the Magnum, you may need to think about short stroking, so I would do some research on that.
For expected rof, have you looked at the battery comparison test that I did. You should find with the magnum and short stroking your gear box will be somewhere between the last 7.4 and the 11.1 LiPo's.
Good luck.

Re: Modify High-Speed Ultra Piston?
Cheers for all your help, how ever not trying to sound stupid but what is AOE?
So save the Magnum until I have the new wire and fet? Short stroking looks good but Im not sure if I fancy taking a few teeth of my new modular gear set.
Where can I find the battery comparison please?
Thanks again for your help :D

Was also going to ask about using pistons with full meat teeth Or is that a different ball game?

AOE = Angle Of Engagement between your pinion gear and whatever the gear it connects with is called :-p
