Yup or the way most gearboxs are timed is when the sticking out thing on the sector gear is just touching the tappet plate (or thats how i do it)....

to get the correct angle of engagement, if that is the problem, hold the piston foward as far as it can go into the cylinder, rotate the bevel gear which inturn spins the spur gear and then the sector gear, the angle of the first tooth/notch on the piston must be correctly lined up with the first tooth of the sector gear that it makes contact with ie. the piston angle pointing towards 7 oclock and the sector gear pointing towards 1 oclock. i'm not great at explaining things online but there are lots of excellent videos out there :D
