Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
15 December, 2010, 21:07
Hey all.
Ive finally succumbed, the Rusky bug has bitten me. I want a loadout to go with my AK, ideally I would absolutely die for a set of flora camo or better yet some SURPAT however I really cant afford it. So I was wondering if anyone had some sort of generic eastern bloc/soviet type loadout I could get some ideas for.
I saw on wikipedia that the russian/easern bloc chaps have been known to wear flektarn, can anyone verify this? As I was thinking something along the lines of Flecktarn trews, OD shirt (perhaps the other way round, fleck top OD trews?) and some sort of AK chicom chest rig. Or perhaps even a totally OD look. I dunno...
Anyway Im rambling now, back to the point, anyone got any photos or tips for doing a good russian/eastern bloc soviet look without breaking the bank. Im not going for any particular "military branch" look, so not too fussed, just something that looks the job.

Re: Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
Eastern bloc for the win. I posted some pics of my balkan-esque get-up in the gear thread, and then Lardassmonkey has posted his chechen loadout, which looks even better. There might be food for thought from those two.
My loadout was mostly cobbled together from old clothes I already had.
Maybe an OD M85 parka (I think Primark are doing a version of these at the moment, if not, an easy ebay search would bring them to your door), with some old american woodland trews.

Re: Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
Yes, some Russian forces have been known to wear flecktarn so you could wear that but only very rarely, they do have their own version after all and plenty of other camos to choose from.
Similarly you could wear US woodland or DPM as there are Russian varients of them but if you're going for a Russian look I think you'd be better off with proper Russian clothing or you may just look like any other player with an AK.
Russian clothing can actually be found cheaply. I've got a set of flora that you can have for £30 if it fits (42" chest, 34" waist for a tall person) and you can get new stuff for not much more. Its usually the webbing equipment that tends to be expensive. A basic set of old Soviet era webbing can be had pretty cheaply but newer kit is more difficult.
Your best bet for a cheap Soviet loadout is usually a KZS suit + a chicom for an Afghanistan look. Unfortunately KZS in anything but small is getting harder to find. KLMK is easier but tends to be more expensive. (I've also got a size 2 set for sale for £35-this is sounding like a sales pitch now)
I hate the term generic Eastern bloc loadout as there is no such thing but a Balkans themed look is the closest to it. It can be more of a militia look so there is more freedom.
OD is a good choice for that, maybe some civilian clothing items and a Chicom chest rig isn't totally out of place.

Re: Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
My first russian loadout was a KZS suit and Chicom chest rig. Think in total it was £50. The problem with KZS and KLMK (I have a KLMK suit also, nicknamed Pajamaflage by the guys at GZ
) is that it was designed to be a disposable oversuit so isn't very durable, the KLMK especially, which was nicknamed the condom. Personally I'd steer away from any Western military kit if you're going for a Soviet look. Flora isn't that expensive as Lardassmonkey says, and Ukrainian TTsKO isn't either. I've also seen sets of Gorka-e Partisan go for the £50 mark, which is a bargain!

Re: Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
Yes KZS isn't very durable being 'disposeable' (ie only issued when needed not as an actual uniform) but it is meant as an oversuit so tends to be more durable with a uniform underneath. KLMK is alot tougher but also still benefits from a uniform underneath. Its great on its own in summer though- nice & cool and a brilliant camo. Soon wipes the smile off the piss takers' face's when you nearly get stepped on in your Pajamas/potato sack.
Yes Ukrainian Ttsko is another option. I have a new full set (inc hat) for £35 :D. Ukrainian vests tend to be cheaper too.

I've seen Pikies around here dressed pretty similarly so its not strictly an Eastern block look!

Re: Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
Unfortunately Im a bit of a chunky monkey, so youre very tempting flora offer wouldnt fit me!
Which makes me sad! Im definately liking the russian border guard look though, something to consider though I was looking for something a bit more all round use than a greatcoat, I think Id die in the summer with that on!

Interestingly, I found my KZS more durable than my KLMK which got ripped on its first time out. The KLMK does work surprisingly well, when you consider how bright it looks when you're not in the vegitation. The facemask is quite funny as well :p

Re: Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
I find KZS gets snagged very easily, however the construction does stop any tears from running. The mask is great and doesn't get in the way when wearing goggles. Saves on camo cream too. :D

Re: Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
Whilst doing some reasearch for my balkan loadout, I saw THE most amazing sniper, and he did indeed have a tracksuit and sparkly white trainers on, and wielded a Dragunov. I wish I'd saved it, it was simply perfect!

Re: Generic Russian/Eastern bloc look
Any idea what this uniform is called or a "close enough" easily available alternative? This is the kind of look Id like to go for, seeing as russian camo appears to be nigh on impossible to get without taking out a mortgage.
Anyone got a list of the kit theyre wearing?
