M240B > L7A2 GPMG Conversion

L7A2 GPMG Conversion
It's got BALLS - with bells on! :D
Received the HBX/Echo-1 M240B today - damn awesome it is, too.
Surprisingly light for such a big weapon but not so light as to feel flimsy. Still going to be satisfyingly awkward to lug about! Construction is solid with no screws needing to be tightened - all very sound. You probably couldn't beat an elephant to death with it but you'd put a horse in hospital for a good few weeks.
Decided the rail will stay (maybe) and I'll do a replica of the current HK version of the weapon which I understand has been fielded on Herrick. Will have to find someone who can flute the barrel...
^ Prototype markings or as issued?....
Bits ordered and on the way:
• Desert colour GPMG Sling
• Belt of inert re-headed 7.62
• Replica GPMG Flash Hider
Bits n' pieces added so far:
• RS BritFor style carry handle
• RS Sight Mount (makes all the difference in my book!).
To Do / Want list:
• RS BritFor style Butt Plate.
• Up to date images of wpn in theatre (with markings).
• Machinist to flute barrel (a little later perhaps).
• Engraving (engraver sourced and on standby).
Spent the best part of the day weathering bit by bit and removed the
hideous
lasered "trademarks"... :D How they consider them a selling point is beyond me.
Teaser:
Annoyances:
• Didn't come with takedown instructions and struggling to work out how to swap front sling attachment to r/h side.
• Wanky US pattern box mag.
Going to have to live with that but may convert a 50 round BritFor box mag (below) if the gubbins will fit (unlikely I would think).
• Gas parts going to be a nause to replicate but low priority.
• Flash hider is a monster and came with 15mm
protruding
thread. In the absense of a male coupler, I'll have to engineer something semi-temporary to afix the GPMG one...
Pictured with standard AEG 14mm Vortex:
Some ref pics fer lolz...
^ "Terry's gonna get this up his ass today" :D

Is it solid enough?
Sometimes outer barrels are more hollow than they should be.

Re: M240B > L7A2 GPMG Conversion
I've heard it's a hefty chunk of turned aluminium so it should hold up. Fairly low priority though.

Re: M240B > L7A2 GPMG Conversion
I've fired
and
tabbed many miles with it (in days thankfully long gone by)!
Yes, 'pretty much' it (if you're a slacker!
) - but there's also:
• The M249 style Gas Plug/parts (!) (will fix).
• Absence of Sight Mount found on most BritFor GPMGs (fixed).
• Absence of BritFor style butt plate (will fix).
• Absence of BritFor style carry handle (fixed).
Picatinny rail is removable - undecided yet.
I'm just picky! :D

I did notice all of those BUT the gas parts but even then minor..to most even if you JUST took off the heat shields most will still say OMFGJFGSD GIMPEHH!!!...also i never care for looking at gas parts so never really notice ..in airsoft..that is
Whats the barrel profile like on the Bravo? similar n chunkeh to that of the gpmg?

Re: M240B > L7A2 GPMG Conversion
Get some!
:D
Update:
As the barrel is turned (fairly pronounced) it's a bit of a bugger to weather so I've just added some dirtying-down here and there.
Holes drilled in the front of the gas regulator - a kind of 'faux' GPMG regulator I suppose.
Balancing mark added to right side. The spotters will love that!
Carrying handle fits but a bit of a gap. Still solid. Ho-hum...
Bits ordered and on the way:
• Desert colour GPMG Sling
• Belt of inert re-headed 7.62
Bits n' pieces added so far:
• RS BritFor style carry handle
• RS Sight Mount (makes all the difference in my book!).
• Correct flash hider.
To Do / Want list:
• RS BritFor style Butt Plate.
• Mold/replicate the correct cocking handle (somehow).
• Up to date images of wpn in theatre (with markings).
I'm going to hold-off on the engraving until I can confiirm 100% what's correct 'as issued'. I've been notified that, as suspected, the HK weapon pictured above is one of the 'Light' titanium trials versions. Also told that the fluted barrels
aren't
used in theatre so that'll save a ball-ache and expense! Rails not seen yet in theatre but not beyond the realms of possibility as RAF/Navy have them fitted.

Re: M240B > L7A2 GPMG Conversion
Cocking handle now done.
Short of actually getting hold of one (yeah, right) and fitting it, this will have to make do. Fashioned from chemical metal, filed to shape and secured with a random plastic spare part, hammered in to handle.

Please stop me if you think I'm going too far!!! :D
