yeah i think black tape would have made it seem like you've bodged it a bit, whilst the brown sets it off nicely. i assume you put a bit on the mag to match, and perhaps for some functional purpose (hicap / midcap / my mag).
you see lots of red and blue tape on mags, which i think will not only render camouflage useless, but confuse the team colour system. 'is he on the red team? his gun's got blue on it?!' brown works nicely.

Magpul XTM Rail Panels......Theres not a great deal of love for Magpul sometime, but the XTM rail covers are very good, and it means you can mix and match the colours to create a semi-camo scheme on the rails as showcased by my M16A4 SMR (Not agreat pic I'm afraid, and the rifle has had some changes since this pic was taken)

I'm wanting some for my guns but with over 5 feet of rail to cover it would get very expensive.

Cheapest I have found is £7.77 for a set from a retailer banned from the Worlds Online marketplace.

Luckily for me I don't have a great deal of railage to cover!

What you want is an EoTech 552 (Got that sorted) with a B&T mount base for it. Then one of them Surefire torch handguards and your sorted.

and yeah surefire torch handguard is coming soon, almost bought one before was used on a real mp5 and even had carbon scorching haha

they can, like a real gun, you just like to keep it nice and clean, instead of tacky.

i know a guy that spent 2k on one not just 1, there is no way i could justify spending that amount of money on something that doesn't LOOK any different externally to a chinese cheapsoft.
