Calibre doesn't come into it really, because at the end of the day most of us are firing 6mm plastic balls at eachother.

Re: Heavy Machine Gunners - Purpose?
Basically, it's just a way of getting a feck-load more bb's into a magazine without looking stupid with a big ass box mag on your M4. Simple really :D

I suppose being a heavy gunner is a choice because you want that favourite gun ie minimi, etc but i dont see the point of it when there is someone next to you with a ridiculous ROF m4 laying down proper suppression fire with plenty of hi cap 500 rds mags, i suppose if you REALLY wanted to be a heavy gunner instead of just getting the gun because you like it, you may as well make the gun a crazy rof to make it relevant.

Thats what i was just stating, you like it because you like that weapon regardless of ROF it gives you a mindset that you are doing a support role, when it still can be easily filled by some crazy ROF stubby killer

Re: Heavy Machine Gunners - Purpose?
I hope youre joking...
Edit for clarity: if you meant that seriously, go back, read the thread. You can pin someone with single shot. You can suppress them with anything with lots of ammo on full auto.
Extreme firepower really doesnt come into it!
Rant over. Sits back and waits for argument to repeat again.

Re: Heavy Machine Gunners - Purpose?
Haha i laughed, people like buying them because they are big and brash and some times intimidating, like i suppose the TM VSR 10, support guns are a base line of upgrading to make them a real support gun, not just a big brash thing that fires no faster than your standard AEG.

Re: Heavy Machine Gunners - Purpose?
Oh I owned a star M60, and I fricking loved it. It is a fantastic looking gun (shame it doesnt work quite as well as it looks).
However, aside from the huge mag, it performs the same as any gun with similar fps/hop. I got rid of it because it was way too heavy. End of.
Ive been suppressed by a P90 before, guy moved through the officers club using it to choke corners while his mates moved up.
To quote an expression Minisnipa probably uses quite often, its not the size that matters its how you use it.

Re: Heavy Machine Gunners - Purpose?
i play the role of support more often than usual now, because its alot of fun!
i support with an RPK, a different from the M249 guys, weight wise its not that bad to lug around, simply because its an ak with a longer barrel and bi-pod, i can keep up with most out there with their assult rifles.
where it comes into its own is the auto winding drum mag, of 3000rds, a bi-pod and the continual drone of bb's, also it does out range most AEG's, sits nicely between an assult rifle and a sniper rifle. I have it at 800rpm, much like the real life version, its second only to the dragunov in range outta the guns i have, and is at 355+/-fps.
there are guys at my site with assult guns with higher rpm (augs and famas's i've seen throw out 1200rpm on a chrono) but they don't have the huge volume of constant rounds.
that said, i don't see some one in a door way and shoot 400 rds down their way, short bursts, and sweeping fire so the other guys in my team can move in and do their thing.
funnily enough with the RPK, it doesn't have the fear factor of other support guns, it looks like any other ak, a bit longer, but really, just an ak, its not until out on the field when the enemy walk into a trap and can't get out that they soon start to fear the eastern block light infantry support gun!
oh and one last thing, support gunners support, but they also need support, as soon as you start to pin guys down they are usually starting to try and flank or snipe you, i always lay fire down, enough to do, or get where we need to, then relocate, keep on the move, too many heavies get in one spot and sit there until they get slapped, campers, i hate them!

Re: Heavy Machine Gunners - Purpose?
As a mk43 and an ex-249 owner i reckon that the intimidation factor is pretty high on any kind of support weapon. Yes you can put a box mag on an mp5k and do the same job but t.b.h. you do look a bit of a nob, lets be honest would stallone have looked as awesome in rambo wielding a beta-magged mp5k instead of an m60?
So in short support weapon, will intimidatre opposing team from the moment you pull it out in the safe zone to the end of the day. The sight of you covering an area will often make players choose an alternate path rather than risking your hose of white plastic. The firepower boost is definitely noticable if you're used to midcaps as well and as mentioned above for milsim games where beta mags, boxes and often hi-caps are frowned upon a support weapon is your only method of getting sustained fire on a target.

Re: Heavy Machine Gunners - Purpose?
On the reloading point, this is why some people (myself included) carry para's because in the worse case scenario we can call to a squad mate for an M4/16 mag to keep us going for those extra few seconds. Secondly, it might be a stupid question that everyone knows for which case i appologise but is there such a thing as a real box mag on an assault rifle, do they acutally exist. Surely in a five man squad they wouldn't be needed because someone else has an LMG and in a recon team like the SAS its too much extra weight to carry and they "shouldn't" need to use that many rounds. Just wondering?
