  • Re: Heavy Machine Gunners - Purpose?

Amen to that mojo, the Americans mite be nuts enough to allow things that do that kinda speed but not here. I mean, i can feel the difference between a 330fps AEG and a 400fps sniper, let alone if thats on automatic
G&G TR15 Raider XL, CA G36K, G&G MP5A4, Cyma Thompson, APS AKS-74U, Custom TM Uzi, DE M56, WE Nighthawk X2, Cyma Glock 18C
RD Customs MG42, The Bone Cannon And Project Balderdash.

If you aren't laughing, you're doing it wrong.

i would say intimidation as it can be a bit nasty if you are up against someone who is shooting in your direction with one of those guns..

I know that mate as ive been playing there for over 6 years now.

What I said was what one of the marshals told me saying that if there was to many support guns then they would start looking at limiting how many would actually be on the field.

aeviv - What it is mate is that people using normal assualt rifles and smg's get an ammo limit of 600 rounds per game whilest people with support weapons get a 2000 round limit per game

If you have a site that does not impose ammo limits then a support gun makes no difference except some intimidation factor.

            Real Steel
In real steel world an M249 for example has 200 round ammo belts. A support gunner will carry around 3 belts/600 rounds. Each remaining member of an 8 man squad would carry a spare 200 round belt in addition to their own ammo- around 6 (x 30 round) mags.

So just in ammo terms, a support gunner would cary about 10X the amount of ammo a trooper would carry plus access to a further 600 spare rounds from three other troopers.

So all in all, if we assume a a 4 man squad/fire team, a support gunner has access to 800 rounds compared to 180 rounds for a non-support trooper. This difference means that a support gunner can bring to bear far greater volume of fire in support of other team members in the form of sustained or suppressive fire. In addition the M249 can take various type of 5.56mm ammo including armour piercing ammo which will shred thin skinned vehicles, cause them to easily explode - that frightens the poo out of the opfor!

            Airsoft
In airsoft we can only realise the difference if we introduce ammo limits so that a support gunner has a distinct advantage base on a ratio of 180:800.

If daily ammo limit is 600 rounds, then a support gunner should be allowed approx 2,700. However if you introduce ammo re-supply points that you need to fight your way to, it becaomes more interesting for both sides!

So, with ammo limits using the above ratios (i.e. 180:800) and with specific section attack drills /tactics invoving cover from a support gunner, your M249 carrying airsofter can actually have a meaningful support gunner role.

With no ammo limits, someone with 8 x 300 round mags would mean that a support gunner should be carrying around 11,000 rounds to make a relative difference between an assualt rifle and an M249- it gets very crazy!

Well, I don't think about it for very long- I just use a multiple of x 4.5 or x5 during Milsim events or during private fight club games- hard core milsim with 30 round mags.

The above is just an explanation/rationalisation for the multiple.

However, in summary the role of support gunner can make a difference if he/she can:

                1. Put out large volume of fire- by having 4.5 to 5 x assualt rifle ammo load
                2. Deliver that volume of fire at higher FPS than the usual 350 fps site standard- say up to 370fps or to a max of 381 fps (legal limit for full auto)
                3. Achieve good (if not better) range than average assault rifle.
                4. Use proper Suppprt gunner tactics

No1 and No 4 above are the most important and the least a support gunner should be able to acheive.

But through achieving 1 and 4 or all of the above, a support gunner will get a lot more respect in the field and make a real difference.

It would be great if sitre owners would consider this- it would make the game more intersting since teams with support gunners could give a genuine tactical advantage to be countered!:D
