Thanks, it is indeed a Diemaco. I have photos in the 16in flavour, although the 10in upper is still a WIP. Once it it done in the next week or so I will get some photos of it up here. It needs abit of an overhaul at the moment.

That looks pretty nifty Devlin - do you happen to have a source for the Browning MkIII grips, because I would like to shamelessly copy that ? I tend to watch ebay for grips but they mostly seem to be in the US and refuse to ship internationally.

Ebay last week, I got lucky and stumbled accross them but I think if you bought some older style black grips or just spayed the WE ones it would look still quite servicable.

I replicated the camo that some of the men from the 7th armoured division did to there sten guns in WWII. I got my hands on a slew of desert rat mags (sight holes soldered shut to keep sand out) a few of them has remnates of tan paint left.

The only painted WWII guns i've ever seen were Owen guns used by the aussies in the jungle.

do you have any photgraphic evidence of stens being painted like this as i've been doing wwii brit re-enacting for nearly ten years now and i've never seen any. I'm not saying you're wrong i'm just saying i'd be interested to see period pics of it as its a new one to me.

Stens are *very* late for the desert war btw, they start being issued in any quantity mid 1942, the usual 'desert war' smg was the thompson 1928 or captured italian beretta SMGs (we some how aquired hundreds of them when the Italians didnt want them any more....)

I've bought and sold alot of sten stuff over the years. In my searches I've seen a hand full of sten parts kits with traces of tan or dark green paint (no clue where these guns were). I believe I still have a green mag laying around here somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it out and take some photos of it. My references come from the talk of old men and the hand full of parts kits/mags I've seen, I'd love to know for sure either way.

I know the US painted some of there stens that they used in vietnam.



Heres some of the mags that I have. So do you believe these are just a marketing ploy/standard issue modification or something they did just for the desert rats?

BTW, the steel vs bronze bolt sound difference is a myth. I cant tell the difference by ear between the two.

in the set you link to that looks far more like abrasian and surface damage to the metal than paint to me.

The British army just didnt as a rule paint guns, its something that comes in around vietnam with the australian SAS and british exchange troopers.

I'm pretty much 99 per cent positive that nobody in 7th armoured would have been allowed to do this, most definitely they wouldn't have sprayed a jerboa on the side!

Like i say, the desert war pretty much stopped in early 43, the sten only came out mid 42 (and at that point the troops in the desert would be using what they had sailed out with, it takes a while for new weapons to filter through) and 7th armoured being a line formation would not have been allowed to paint weapons... for a start what did they spray it with, the vehicle compressors and truck paint? Thats *massive* ballache to be doing in the western desert. The germans painted some stuff sand but that was big pieces of field kit like radios and grenade boxs (and the odd pair of hand painted binos) but that was largely late war too and mainly because they ran out of green paint!

It's just *very* unlikely and looks odd to me but if its not done to be 'historically accurate' then cool, interesting paint job.

dont get me wrong, its an interesting look and possibly cool for vietnam but i think if you want to use that for a WWII event i'd respray it black as it doesnt look right at the mo.

Are you sure they are not 9mm owen gun mags? Those are quite commonly covered in green and sand paint.

Basically just try and find pictures of stens in the western desert thats hard enough. The first load were dropped to french resistance (its partly why it uses the same ammo as german mp40s) and used to equip parachute formations.

If you really want to know i can ask about on some more specialist WWII forums but I'm a bit suspicious of any mags with paint on them being actually 'camoflaged' from WWII.
